THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team won the third annual "Sound Shootout" against the Merchant Marine Mariners on Thursday evening, knocking off its opponent by an 11-9 score.
In the game, junior
Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) collected eight ground balls to give her 145 for her career, breaking the previous career mark of 140 set by
Catherine Brady '12. Lavelle has 42 ground balls to this point in the 2015 season following her sophomore year with 60, and picking up 43 during her rookie campaign in 2013.
During the game, Lavelle finished with the team lead in ground balls, while also collecting a team-best five caused turnovers, to go along with two goals and three assists in the win.
Sophomore
Kelsey Ireland (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) had four goals on the contest, while
Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) added two goals and an assist. Sophomore
Hannah Mutum (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) chipped in with two goals, while junior
Elizabeth Higley (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) had one tally on three shots. Lavelle and Ireland were tied for the team lead in draw controls with four apiece.
Maritime opened the scoring with three straight goals as Ireland and Reynolds scored off passes from Lavelle, then Reynolds scored again on a free-position attempt to put the Privateers ahead by three with eight minutes gone by in the half. Merchant Marine scored next to trim the deficit to two.
Mutum got on the board with her first of the game to give Maritime its three-goal lead back with 15:13 to go in the half. Merchant Marine scored next, but Maritime answered as Ireland picked up her second of the game to put the Privateers up by a 5-2 mark.
After another Mariner tally, Ireland answered with her third of the half with 42 seconds left in the period to give Maritime a 6-3 lead. Merchant Marine scored with 12 seconds to go, as Maritime went into the halftime break ahead by a pair.
The Mariners opened the scoring in the second half to cut the lead to one, but Higley answered back minutes later to put Maritime back up by two. Merchant Marine scored next, but again Maritime responded with Mutum collecting her second of the game, followed by another goal from the stick of Ireland to put Maritime ahead by three once again at 9-6.
Merchant Marine was on the board next as the team attempted to close the gap, but for the sixth time in the game, Maritime took a three-goal advantage. The Privateers took its seventh three-goal lead after a Lavelle goal came with 1:10 left in the period in response to a Mariner goal. Merchant Marine scored once more in the final minute but it was too little, too late for the road team.
In the close game on the scoreboard, stats were just as close as shots were 32-26 in favor of Maritime . Ground balls, draw controls and turnovers were all close between the two side as well. Maritime was 16-of-27 on clear attempts, while Merchant Marine was 14-of-23.
Maritime (3-8, 0-5 Skyline) will resume play on Sunday morning when the team plays host to the Old Westbury Panthers at 11 a.m. on Reinhart Field. Prior to the game, Maritime will be recognizing its lone senior
Faye Dohring (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) in an on-field ceremony.
Merchant Marine (1-7, 0-4 Landmark) will travel to take on Catholic for a 12 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
