Privateers Overwhelm Mount St. Vincent for First Conference Win of Season

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Freshman Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) led the team with three goals and three assists as the Maritime men's lacrosse team upended the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins on Wednesday afternoon as the road team from Reinhart Field on the Maritime campus.

In addition to Danahy's six-point day, Maritime got two goals from sophomore Kevin Izzo (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck) and freshman Scott Martin (Westhampton Beach, N.Y./Westhampton Beach). Maritime also got goals from senior Robert Lalena, as well as freshman Julius Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) and Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East).

Junior Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) was 12-for-14 on his faceoff attempts and also led the Privateers with nine loose ball pickups. Pellegrino had five ground balls, while Danahy and classmates Paul Lafrancesca (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North) and Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) each had three.

Defensively the team was led by junior captain Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) with three caused turnovers, while rookie Joseph Hussey (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had two to his credit. In goal, McNally had a career-best 14 saves on the day while yielding just two goals.

Maritime didn't take long to jump on the scoreboard first as Izzo netted a goal just over a minute into the period. Danahy followed just over a minute later with an unassisted tally. Danahy scored once more in the period off a pass from senior Mike Gangarossa (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) to put the Privateers ahead 3-0.

In the second quarter, only one goal was scored as the Dolphins scored with 4.4 seconds left in the period to trim the lead to 3-1 heading into the halftime break.

The Privateers took advantage of a man-up situation as Danahy found Martin in front of the net to give Maritime its three-goal lead once again. Danahy picked up assists on each of the next two goals as Diaz and Izzo scored to give Maritime a 6-1 advantage. Danahy scored the next Maritime goal as he collected his sixth point on six consecutive Maritime goals.

Mount St. Vincent scored with 5:12 left in the third quarter to pull the Dolphins within five at 7-2.

After several minutes of no scoring, Martin opened up the flood games once again on an unassisted marker. Lalena followed with a goal 36 seconds later off a pass from Pellegrino, while Pellegrino capped off the scoring from a pass from freshman Joe Fusco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) to give Maritime the 10-2 victory.

The Privateers outshot the Dolphins by a 34-27 margin, while also succeeding on 9-of-13 clear attempts. Maritime won 12 of 14 faceoffs, but did turn the ball over 38 times while the Dolphins gave the ball away 36 times on the day.

Offensive game ball honors went to Hayes, while McNally earned defensive game ball accolades. The Helmet Award went to Gangarossa, while Hayes was also the team's Hammer Captain prior to the game.
