Women’s Lacrosse Opens Conference Play with Loss to Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team opened its Skyline Conference slate on Saturday afternoon with a road contest against the Purchase Panthers, and fell by the score of 18-9 in Westchester County.
 
Maritime was led by sophomore Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) with three goals on the afternoon, while the team also got two goals each from junior Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) and sophomore Hannah Mutum (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey).
 
Purchase began the game with five unanswered goals as the Panthers took the early lead with 7:01 gone by in the first half.
 
Quinn ended the drought as she picked up Maritime's first goal of the contest with 20:25 left in the opening period on an unassisted tally. The Panthers then added seven more unanswered goals to take a commanding 12-1 lead with just over a minutes to go in the opening stanza.
 
Mutum got on the board with her third goal of the season to trim the deficit to 10 as the score was 12-2 at the halftime break.
 
In the second half, Purchase scored first to make it an 11-goal lead, but Maritime answered as Lavelle scored on a free position shot to make the score 13-3. Quinn then scored her second of the game, followed by freshman Christa Case (Southington, Conn./Southington) scoring off a pass from Quinn.
 
After another Purchase goal, junior Elizabeth Higley (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) took a pass from classmate Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) to make the score 14-6. Lavelle netted her second goal of the game at the 16:22 mark of the second half, while Mutum recorded her second of the contest with 14:10 to go. Purchase then added three more goals to regain a 10-goal lead at 18-8 with just over three minutes to go in the game.
 
With 18 seconds left in the contest, Quinn picked up her third of the game off a pass from Lavelle to cap off the scoring at 18-9.
 
Most team statistics were fairly even as free position shots were tied at five, turnovers were also close as Maritime gave the ball away 14 times while Purchase gave it away 11 times. Clears were also even as Maritime was 2-for-2 on its attempts, with Purchase 3-for-4 on its attempts.
 
Draw controls were handled by the Panthers as they collected 17 to the Privateers' eight. Purchase also picked up 23 ground balls, with Maritime scooping up 14 loose balls.
 
Maritime (2-4, 0-1 Skyline) will resume conference play on Thursday evening, when the team takes on Sage on the University at Albany's John Fallon Field beginning at 7 p.m. in New York's State Capitol.
 
Purchase (6-0, 2-0 Skyline) will look to keep its hot start going as the team will host Albertus Magnus at 4:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
