THROGGS NECK, N.Y. –The Maritime men's lacrosse team fell to the Kean Cougars, 15-3 in the team's Skyline Conference opener.
Maritime was led by freshman
Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) with two goals on the afternoon, while senior
Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) also netted a goal for the Privateers in the loss. Junior
Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) was 12-for-19 on faceoff attempts and was tied for the team lead with five ground balls.
Also tied for the team ground ball lead was freshman
Joseph Hussey (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's), who had five to go along with a caused turnover. Senior
Jordan Rose (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and junior
Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) led the squad with two caused turnovers each. In goal,
Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) made 12 saves in the loss.
Kean started off the game with two goals within three minutes. Maritime answered with their first goal with 10:22 left in the first quarter, as Grubb rifled a shot past the Cougar keeper. Ten seconds later, Danahy tied the game at two apiece.
In the second quarter, the Cougars were able to shut out the Privateers in the period while adding four goals of their own to take an 8-2 lead into the halftime break.
After the halftime break, the Cougars continued to roll as they score four more unanswered tallies to take a 10-goal lead with the game heading to the final stanza.
Kean added a ninth straight unanswered goal to take a 13-2 lead. Maritime finally broke the scoring run by the Cougars as Danahy scored his second goal of the contest to make the score 13-3. The Cougars scored two more goals to close out the game as Kean won by a 15-3 final.
Final stats saw the Privateers rack up 24 shots, led by Danahy with five. Grubb and freshman
Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) each recorded three shots, while five others had two shots each. Maritime also recorded 30 ground ball on the day with Hussey and Hayes leading the way.
McNally played 51 minutes and allowed 13 goals, while registering 12 saves on the afternoon. Freshman
Ian Ballou (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) played the remainder of the game and let up two goals, while making two saves.
Maritime (4-4, 0-1 Skyline) will be back in action on Wednesday, April 1, when it takes on the Dolphins of Mount St. Vincent at 4 p.m. in Riverdale, N.Y.
Kean (5-4, 1-0 Skyline) will also play again on April 1 when they play Scranton at home at 7 p.m.
