Women’s Lacrosse Drops Afternoon Matchup versus SUNY Polytechnic

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team ended its four-game homestand with a matchup against the SUNY Polytechnic Wildcats on Thursday afternoon on Reinhart Field, and fell to their guests by a 13-7 score.
 
Sophomore Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) led the Privateers with five goals on a game-high 10 shots, and also chipped in with 10 draw controls. Junior Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) had a goal and two assists, while classmate Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) netted a goal on three shots and also led the team with four caused turnovers.
 
In goal, sophomore Christina Finnen (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) finished the contest with nine saves, while yielding all of SUNY Poly's goals.
 
The Wildcats got on the board first with a pair of goals within the first five minutes of the game, but Quinn was able to trim the lead in half with a goal at the 23:15 mark off a pass from Reynolds. SUNY Poly collected another goal to regain its two-goal lead.
 
Quinn got back on the scoresheet with a goal halfway through the period to take pull the Privateers back within one. SUNY Poly scored the next four goals of the game to take a 7-2 lead with 4:26 to go in the half.
 
Lavelle got in on the scoring action with a tally at the 52 second mark, but the Wildcats scored with 30 seconds to go to take an 8-3 lead into the halftime break.
 
In the second half, SUNY Poly scored first but Quinn ended the drought off another pass from Reynolds. SUNY Poly scored the next three, including a man-down goal. Reynolds scored next for Maritime to make the score 12-5. After another SUNY Poly, Maritime rounded out the scoring with two goals from Quinn to cap off the scoring at 13-7.
 
On the game, draw controls were even at 11 apiece, while both teams were also awarded with three free position shots each. The Wildcats led the ground ball battle with 20, in contrast to Maritime's 14. The Privateers were 12-for-14 on clear attempts, while SUNY Poly was 14-of-22.
 
Maritime (2-3, 0-0 Skyline) will return to the field on Saturday when the team travels to Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to take on the Wilkes Colonels at 2 p.m. SUNY Polytechnic (2-0, 0-0 NEAC) will return home to take on Canton on Saturday afternoon 3:00 p.m.
