Women’s Lacrosse Claims First Maritime Cup with Victory over Mass. Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team claimed the first-ever women's lacrosse Maritime Cup on Sunday afternoon as the team upended the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers by the score of 11-7 on Reinhart Field.
 
Sophomore Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) led the team with five goals, and also led the team with two caused turnovers and had a team-high nine draw controls. Junior Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) also had four points, with three goals and one assist. The Privateers also got goals from juniors Elizabeth Higley (Palm City, Fla./Martin County), Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego), and freshman Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) each had goals as well.
 
Sophomore Christina Finnen (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) made nine saves as she picked up her second win of the season. In addition to Quinn with her two caused turnovers, Lavelle also had two, as did freshmen Christa Case (Southington, Conn./Southington) and Paige Frankel (Hackensack, N.J./Immaculate Conception).
 
Quinn got the scoring going for the Privateers to put the Maritime ahead by a 1-0 score. Mass. Maritime tied the game with a free position shot minutes later.
 
Higley netted a free position goal to put the Privateers up by a 2-1 score. Quinn netted the next two goals, followed by Lavelle with the next two to make the score 6-1 in favor of the Privateers heading into the halftime break.
 
The Privateers got the offense cranking once again in the second half as Quinn scored her fourth goal of the contest. Brady got on the scoreboard with a quick goal off a pass from Lavelle, but was answered a minute later by a goal from Mass. Maritime.
 
After another Buccaneer goal, Reynolds got in on the scoring action to give the Privateers a 9-3 lead with 16:25 left in regulation. Mass. Maritime got back within five at 9-4, but the Privateers added another goal from Quinn to reach double digits. The Buccaneers made things close with a pair of goals top inch closer.
 
Lavelle added a knockout punch as she added a goal with 1:23 left in the game, Mass. Maritime collected one more goal with a minute left to cap off the scoring at 11-7.
 
The win clinched the Privateers the first ever Maritime Cup, as the team also collected a win over Maine Maritime on Friday evening.
 
Maritime (2-2, 0-0 Skyline) will get back to action on Thursday evening on Reinhart Field when the team takes on SUNY Polytechnic at 5 p.m.
 
Mass. Maritime (1-1, 0-0 MASCAC) will be on the road once again as the team takes on Coast Guard on Thursday evening in New London, Conn.
