Women's Lacrosse Falls to Stockton in Non-Conference Play

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team played on Wednesday evening against the Stockton Ospreys at Brooks Stadium on the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy campus, and fell by the score of 21-3 in non-conference action.
 
Junior Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) led the team with two of the team's three goals, and also held the team lead in draw controls with four on the evening. Lavelle also had the team-high with eight ground balls, followed by sophomore Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) with three on the night. Quinn also led the team in caused turnovers with three and also chipped in with a pair of draw controls.
 
Sophomore Kelsey Ireland (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) netted her first career goal to start off the scoring for the Privateers in the first half on a free-position shot. In goal, sophomore Christina Finnen (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) started and made 11 saves while also picking up one ground ball in 46 minutes of play. Junior Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) made one save in the final 14 minutes of play.
 
Stockton took a quick 2-0 advantage with a pair of unassisted goals within the first 3:02 of regulation.
 
Maritime answered back to trim the lead in half several minutes later with Ireland's free-position goal with 24:27 left in the opening half. The Privateers were then outscored 11-0 through the remainder of the half and went into halftime trailing by a 13-1 score.
 
Stockton added three more unanswered goals to start off the second period to take a 16-1 advantage, but Maritime was able to end its drought.
 
Lavelle picked up he first strike of the game with 21:56 left in regulation, that came after she picked up a ground ball and cleared the distance of the field. The Ospreys continued with five more goals as Stockton took a 21-2 lead.
 
The Privateers got one more goal with 70 seconds left on the clock as Lavelle picked up her team-leading fifth goal of the season to cap off the scoring for the game at 21-3.
 
Maritime (0-2, 0-0 Skyline) will resume play on Friday afternoon when the team plays host to Maine Maritime in the opening contest of the 2015 Maritime Cup at 5 p.m., the game will start a three-day six-game event that will carry throughout the weekend on Reinhart Field.
 
Stockton (3-0, 0-0 NJAC) will travel to take on Immaculata in its next contest on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. to cap off its Spring Break week.
