Eight Privateers Score in Maritime Cup Victory over Maine Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team defeated the Maine Maritime Mariners 16-6 on the first day of the 2015 Maritime Cup. The Privateers improve to 1-2 overall while the Mariners fall to 0-2 overall.

The 16 goals are the most since March 14, 2013, when the Privateers defeated the Merchant Marine Mariners by the score of 23-4.

The Mariners came off firing with two shots on goal, before Taylor O'Malley scored the first goal of the match.

Maritime scored two goals in a span of three minutes, as freshman Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and sophomore Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) both found the back of the net. The Mariners scored their second goal of the game to tie the game at two.

Both teams swapped the lead, until Quinn and junior Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) scored for Maritime, giving the Privateers a 5-3 lead. Maine Maritime then cut the lead to one at 5-4. Maritime scored the next two goals, from sophomore Hannah Mutum (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) and junior Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego), going into the half ahead by a 7-4 score. Maritime had 17 shots, while the Mariners collected 14 in the opening half.

In the second period, the Privateers scored four goals in a span of five minutes, as they extended the lead to 12-4 with goals from Quinn, freshman Christa Case (Southington, Conn./Southington), Brady and sophomore Kelsey Ireland (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) all scored. Maine Maritime scored two more goals, cutting their deficit to nine.
Maritime scored four more goals, two from sophomore Marisa Athan (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola), Lavelle, and Brady to cap off the scoring. In the second half, the Privateers shot 19 shots, while Maine Maritime registered 13 shots.

In goal, Maritime goalkeeper sophomore Christina Finnen (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) played all 60 minutes, yielded six goals, and made nine saves.  Her counterpart Ashlee Knight played all 60 minutes as well and gave up 16 goals, and making 10 saves.

The Privateers will be back in action on Sunday, March 15 when they play the Buccaneers of Mass. Maritime at 11 a.m. Maine Maritime will be back in action on tomorrow afternoon when they play the Buccaneers in the second day of the 2015 Maritime Cup at 11 a.m.
