Men’s Soccer Blanks Old Westbury in Key Skyline Conference Win

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Soccer team picked up an important victory in Skyline Conference play on Wednesday afternoon, as the team knocked off the Old Westbury Panthers by a 1-0 score from Panther Park on Long Island.

Maritime was led by senior Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)) as he scored the game's lone goal in the early stages of the match. Chira-Farfan's goal was assisted by classmate Sheick Wattara (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly for Math & Science).

In goal, senior Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) picked up another clean sheet as he picked up four saves in the match.

The Privateers got off to a quick start as Chira-Farfan took the first shot of the match in the seventh minute. After receiving a pass from Wattara, Chira-Farfan blasted a shot past the Panther goalkeeper to put Maritime ahead by a 1-0 score.

Maritime had another strong chance in the 20th minute, when Wattara took a shot that hit off the post. Wattara totaled five shots in the first half alone. In the first half, Maritime recorded 10 shots, while Old Westbury took three.

In the second half, the Privateers continued to control the play in the early going of the period as Chira-Farfan and Wattara both took shots in the opening minutes of the period. Old Westbury then peppered three shots, with one on target that was denied by Weber.

Freshman Jack Feehan (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) took a shot in the 67th minute that sailed over the crossbar.

In the final 15 minutes of regulation, the tide turned as Old Westbury began to take their chances with a pair of shots coming in an eight second span as play crossed into the 77th minute of play. The Panthers rattled off two more chances before Feehan ended the run with a shot of his own at 82:12.

Neither side was able to muster much in the final seven-plus minutes of play as the Privateers held on for the key 1-0 Skyline Conference victory.

Wattara led the team with six shots, while Chira-Farfan recorded four shots. Feehan and senior Colton Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) also took a pair of shots in the match as Maritime finished with 16 on the afternoon.

Corner kicks were well in favor of the Privateers, as Maritime took eight in contrast to Old Westbury's one. The Privateers were also called offsides twice.

Maritime (10-6-0, 4-4-0 Skyline) will resume league play on Saturday afternoon when the team travels to take on Purchase for a 2 p.m. start in Westchester County.

Old Westbury (4-8-2, 4-2-2 Skyline) will travel to take on Sage on Saturday afternoon, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. on the College of Saint Rose campus.
