THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Women's Volleyball team took a non-conference match in four sets against the Culinary Institute of America in Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium on Monday evening.
Sophomore
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) racked up 17 kills and 20 digs on the way to the win. Junior
Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) added 11 kills and 15 digs.
The Privateers took the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-17, in large part due to the play of junior setter
Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central) who tallied 33 assists to go along with seven digs and four service aces in the match.
After dropping the third set 25-17, Maritime rallied for a comeback win in the fourth set, 26-24. Towards the end of that fourth set, the Privateers were down 20-15 before storming back for five straight points to tie the match at 20. Following a few back-and-forth points, freshman
Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) hit one of her seven service aces for the 26th point and the win.
Senior
Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward (Fla.)) also contributed a strong game with 10 digs and eight kills.
The Steels fall to 6-6 on the season with the loss.
Maritime (13-11, 4-2 Skyline) will look to build on this momentum in their next match, this Wednesday, October 21, against Brooklyn College at 7 p.m. in Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
