Senior Day Photo GalleryTHROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Volleyball team knocked off the Brooklyn Bulldogs on Wednesday evening from the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The team swept past their opponent by a 3-0 score.
Prior to the match, the Privateers honored the four members of their senior class;
Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward (Fla.)),
Meghan Burke (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner),
Colleen Sheehy (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) and manager
Keith Martin (Closter, N.J./Don Bosco Prep).
Leading the team on the court was junior
Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) with 14 kills to go along with a team-best four service aces and 10 digs. Sophomore
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) had a team-best .412 hitting percent as she put down 10 kills and added 11 digs as well.
Junior
Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central) collected 36 assists to lead the match, as she also was tied for the team lead in service aces as she registered four. Freshman
Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) added three service aces and contributed with five digs.
Defensively, Brady and Sheehy led the team with a pair of block assist, as Sheehy also chimed in with a pair of kills. Leading the team in terms of digs was freshman
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) with a career-best 19.
In the first set, Maritime won by a 25-17 score as the Privateers jumped out to a quick 8-2 advantage. During the run, Acklin, Lombardo, Brady, and Pfundstein all had kills during the early run for Maritime. After Brooklyn closed the gap, at 10-7, the Privateers responded with four straight points and eventually took a 22-11 lead.
The Bulldogs recorded five straight before a timeout was called by the Privateers. After an error by Brooklyn, Lombardo earned a kill and Brady ended the set with a kill of her own.
The Privateers stormed out of the gates in the second set with eight unanswered points as Bailey served the team to the early lead. Brooklyn closed the gap to 13-8, but Maritime rallied for another run.
Brady picked up a pair of kills while Hayes earned a service ace to give Maritime a 17-6 lead. The teams exchanged points through the next series, before a Brooklyn service error and a Brady kill finished off the set at 25-15.
The closest set of the night was the third as Maritime held off the Bulldogs by a 25-21 score. After Maritime jumped ahead by an 8-4 score, the Bulldogs evened the score with four points of their own. The Bulldogs took an 11-9 lead, but the Privateers answered back to take a 12-11 lead on kills by Burke, Brady and Hayes.
Brooklyn took the lead back, but Maritime responded once again as the lead see-sawed between the two squads. Maritime took a 19-18 lead and did not relinquish through the remainder of the set, as the team closed out the match with four of the final five points.
Maritime (14-11, 4-2 Skyline) will take its two-match winning streak into an important Skyline Conference tri-match as the squad takes on Sage at 11 a.m. on Saturday, followed by a date with the Farmingdale Rams at 1 p.m.
Brooklyn (6-16, 3-4 CUNYAC) will return home to take on Bard at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon from the West Quad Center in Brooklyn.
