THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - The Maritime Men's Soccer team dropped a tightly contested Skyline Conference match in double overtime to St. Joseph's (LI), 2-1, on Saturday afternoon on Reinhart Field.
The Privateers took the lead on an early goal from senior Kevin Ferriera in the 16th minute of play. Maritime freshman
Parker Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) played a long through ball to senior
Colton Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South), who shot the ball off the keeper. The ball deflected out wide to Ferriera and he took a sliding shot into an open net for his second goal of the season.
Maritime's defense, led by sophomore
Matt Smith (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) and freshman
Jack Feehan (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale), had a strong game despite the result. The Privateers held St. Joseph's (LI) to only five shots total and three on goal.
Senior Renato Chia-Farfan and freshman
Billy Horgan (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) both registered shots on goal in the match. Maritime finished with 10 total shots, with five on goal.
Junior
Kieran Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had a strong match as a substitute filling in at a multitude of positions.
St. Joseph's (LI) (6-9-1, 5-2-1 Skyline) scored its first goal 59 minutes into the match on a header off a free kick. After a scoreless first overtime, the Golden Eagles scored on a free kick from 50-yards out to win the match with 7:38 left to go in the second overtime period.
Maritime (9-6-0, 3-4-0 Skyline) will play their next match at Old Westbury at 3:30 pm on Wednesday, October 21.
