Volleyball Picks Up Record-Tying 12th Win of the Season, 3-0 over Medgar Evers

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Volleyball team tied its single-season high for wins in a year with its 12th victory of the campaign on Wednesday evening. To earn the victory, the squad knocked off the Medgar Evers Cougars by the score of 3-0 from the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
 
The win total of 12 ties the 2014 season total, which saw Maritime finish the year with 12 victories.
 
Maritime took the opening set by a 25-8 score, followed by a 25-12 win in set number two. The Privateers finished off the match with a score of 25-14 in the third set of the night.
 
Leading the way for the team was junior Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) with eight kills, while sophomore Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and freshman Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) each had five. Lombardo led the team with seven service aces, while junior Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central) added five of her own.
 
Bailey also led the team as she recorded 16 assists on the night. Senior Colleen Sheehy (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) also got on the scoresheet with a kill in her lone attack attempt on the match.
 
Defensively, Maritime had four individuals pick up four digs apiece as Lombardo, Hayes, Bailey and junior Alyssa Esposito (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) all had three. Seniors Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward (Fla.)) and Meghan Burke (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner), along with freshman Isabella Kent (Narrowsburg, N.Y./Sullivan West) each had two. Junior Irene Gogos (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Aviation), Brady and freshman Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) rounded out the team's total of 21 for the match.
 
In the opening set, Medgar Evers earned the first four points of the match, the Privateers responded with five unanswered to take its first lead of the match. The Cougars recorded two more points, followed by one from the Privateers to even the opener at six.
 
Hayes recorded three service aces to propel Maritime to a 9-6 advantage, which was not relinquished through the remainder of the set. The Privateers rolled out nine more unanswered points to jump ahead to an 18-7 lead. After one point by Medgar Evers, Maritime finished off the opener with seven straight for the victory.
 
In the second set, the Privateers took a quick 7-1 lead as Bailey connected on a pair of service aces, while Lombardo recorded two kills and Kent picked up one kill. Later in the set, a quick surge by Medgar Evers pulled the Cougars within five at 15-10, but Lombardo connected on a pair of kills to end the Cougar rally.
 
The Privateers polished off the second set with eight of the final nine points for the 25-12 win.
 
The third set once again saw Maritime take an early 3-0 lead, which included a pair of service aces by Lombardo. Maritime put up a lengthy rally as Brady connected on her serves and was replaced by Gogos throughout the run. Gogos registered a pair of service aces during her service turn.
 
With a 10-point advantage at 16-6, the Privateers posted six straight points to take a 22-6 lead as Bailey recorded three consecutive service aces during the solid rally. Medgar Evers attempted to come back late in the set with eight points, but the Privateers finished off the match with an unexpected kill from Bailey to give Maritime a 25-14 third set win.
 
As a team, Maritime had its second highest hitting percent at .373, following the season-high .381 set against Sarah Lawrence on September 12.
 
Maritime (12-9, 4-2 Skyline) will travel to Jersey City, N.J. on Saturday afternoon, when the team takes part in a tri-match hosted by the Gothic Knights. Maritime will also meet-up with former Skyline foe Manhattanville while at the tri-match.
 
Medgar Evers (0-19, 0-6 CUNYAC) will host Farmingdale in a non-conference match on Monday evening, with the start of the match slated for 7 p.m.
