Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Maritime women's soccer team opened up its 2014 campaign on Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium and fell to the host Morrisville Mustangs by the score of 1-0.
Junior goalkeeper
Kristen Hoar (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East) picked up where she left off in 2013, as the netminder collected 12 saves on the afternoon. Offensively the team was only able to muster eight shots, including two each from sophomore
Marisa Athan (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) and freshman
Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) and
Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist).
After Morrisville registered the first shot of the afternoon just under three minutes into the young season, Maritime responded with an offensive chance of its own but was whistled for being offsides on the play. Hoar stopped several shots until the 16th minute, when the Privateers were in the offensive third of the field and collected two shots, both of which were off target.
Neither side yielded a goal throughout the first half of the contest, as the Mustangs outshot the Privateers by a 7-4 margin.
In the second half, it took just three minutes once again for Morrisville to take its first shot of the half. However, this time the ball found the back of the net as Amber Welsh was able to send the ball past Hoar for the first tally of the contest.
The Privateers fended off five more consecutive shots by the Mustang offense before returning the favor as freshman
Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) put a shot on goal that was stopped by Mustang goalkeeper Angela Marriott. Maritime had a chance to tie on a corner kick by junior
Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego), but were unable to take a shot in the series.
In the 75th minute, the Mustangs committed a foul inside the box, forcing the referee to stop the clock and award Maritime a penalty kick. The chance was taken by Woods, but her free chance was stopped as Marriott refused to give up her clean sheet.
As play progressed, Avitto had a chance in the 88th minute but again to no success as it was stopped. Morrisville took one more corner kick in the final minute as they were able to hold off the Privateers for the final 54 seconds to secure the victory.
Marriott made four saves to collect her first victory of the season, while Hoar stopped 12 shots and allowed just the one goal for the match.
Final shots were in favor of the Mustangs by a 19-8 margin, while Morrisville also held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks through 90 minutes.
Maritime (0-1) will continue its upstate New York road trip with a 1 p.m. stop on Sunday afternoon against the Cazenovia Wildcats. Morrisville (1-0) will return to action on Wednesday, with a 4 p.m. trip to Southern Vermont.
