Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 8, 2014) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team dropped the first game of the season at Reinhart Field on Saturday afternoon to the Shenandoah Hornets by the score of 10-5.
Despite the loss, sophomore
Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) was perfect from the faceoff 'X' as he won 16-of-16 to place him in a tie for 9th on the single-game record list with Donald Toby, who had done it twice in both the 2006 and 2007 seasons against Centenary.
Senior
Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) led the Privateers with two goals while seniors
Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield),
Dylan Larmony (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and freshman
Zachary Pace (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) all collected goals in the game for Maritime.
Shenandoah took a 2-0 lead with just over 10 minutes gone by in the opening quarter. Maritime was given a man-up opportunity and capitalized as Pace picked up the goal from an assist off a pass from Grubb.
The Hornets scored two more in the second quarter, and started the second half with two more and opened up a 6-1 lead with 9:30 to go in the 3rd quarter.
Grubb picked up an unassisted tally to cut the deficit to four. Shenandoah then responded with two more to close out the quarter and take a six-goal advantage into the final stanza.
Larmony netted an unassisted goal 1:40 into the final period to start off the scoring for Maritime in the final 15 minutes. Shenandoah answered back once again to regain its largest lead of the game. Grubb and Scalesi netted markers less than 45 seconds apart to pull Maritime back within four. The Hornets picked up one more goal to cap off the scoring at 10-5.
Final shots were in favor of Shenandoah by a 43-39 margin, while the Hornets also won the turnover battle with 18 giveaways to Maritime's 33. The Privateers did have the advantage in ground balls with a 36-30 advantage.
In goal, sophomore
Mike Arnold (Plainedge, N.Y./Plainedge) picked up a career-high 19 saves while yielding 10 goals in the losing effort. Earning the win was Ben Judy, who allowed five goals and made 15 saves to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Maritime (1-3, 0-0 Skyline) will travel to Danbury, Connecticut to take on Western Connecticut on Wednesday, March 12 for a 7 p.m. start against the Colonials. Shenandoah (4-3, 0-0 OAC) will return home next weekend to take on Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
