Men's Lacrosse Preview: Privateers Head to Maine in Search of Maritime Cup

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 14, 2014) –
This weekend the Maritime Cup takes place in Castine, Maine with the Privateer men's lacrosse team in search of a pair of victories on Saturday and Sunday against Mass. Maritime and the host Mariners of Maine Maritime. This weekend will be the first of what hopes to be a long-standing tradition between the three institutions, with the winner of the weekend tournament taking home the First-Ever Maritime Cup.

Maritime takes on Mass. Maritime on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. followed by a Sunday matinee against Maine Maritime starting at 12 p.m.

LAST GAME RECAP

In Maritime's last contest, the team fell to the Western Connecticut State Colonials on Wednesday evening in Danbury, Conn. by the score of 16-7. In the game, junior Neil Nembhard (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and freshman Corey Cristallo (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) each collected three points each in the losing effort.

Maritime also got goals from seniors Dylan Larmony (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), while rookies Zachary Pace (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) and Colin McCoy (Glen Allen, Va./Greenport (N.Y.)) each picked up one apiece as well. Senior James D'Amico (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) also had a multi-point effort with two assists in the game.

In goal, sophomore Mike Arnold (Plainedge, N.Y./Plainedge) went the first three quarters and made seven saves while yielding the first 14 goals. Freshman Alex Heim entered the fourth period and registered the first three saves of his career.

SCOUTING THE BUCCANEERS

Mass. Maritime is 1-0 on the season with its lone victory coming against non-conference opponent Albertus Magnus. The Buccaneers will take on Maine Maritime on Friday evening, before taking on the Privateers tomorrow.

The Buccaneers were led in their lone game of the season by Reed McLean and Sam Jarvis as the duo collected three goals each on a combined 17 shots. Kevin Collins also had two goals for Mass. Maritime along with eight other players, who finished the game with one goal apiece

Mass. Maritime split time between three goalkeepers in the win as Paul Painten started and played 30 minutes while making just one save to earn the win. Keison Cunningham made five saves in 23:16 worth of time on the field. James Klose finished off the game without a save in 6:44.

SCOUTING THE MARINERS

Maine Maritime has also only played one game on the season as the team fell to Curry on the road by the score of 11-3 in Massachusetts.

The three Mariner goal scorers were Nicholas Betti, Bronson Guimond, and Tim Grant. In goal, Gavin Cote made 10 saves while allowing 11 goals for the game.

The Mariners were 14-for-20 for clears and 1-of-2 in man-up situations. In the faceoff category, Maine Maritime was 10-for-18.

ALL-TIME SERIES

The Privateers are 4-1 since the start of the 2005 season against Mass. Maritime with the Privateers winning last season's battle by a 12-10 score. Matthew Messina led the Privateers with four goals in the game while Tom Kelly added three of his own. Daniel Ahern collected a team-high five points with two goals and three assists.

Against the Mariners of Maine Maritime, the Privateers are 2-0 since the start of the 2005 season. Last year the Privateers played against the Mariners in Buzzards Bay, Mass. and picked up a one-goal victory by a 12-11 score. A balanced attack led the Privateers to victory as Messina, Kelly, Ahern and Ed Fargo each picked up two goals in the win.

Nick Barbuto got the win in both matchups against Mass. Maritime and Maine Maritime as he collected 27 saves combined in the two victories.

UP NEXT

After this weekend the Privateers will return home to take on Lyndon State on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. on Reinhart Field.

Mass. Maritime will host Plymouth State at 4 p.m. on March 18. Maine Maritime will play host to Johnson State on March 22 at 12 p.m.
