NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Feb. 17, 2014) – This past weekend, the Maritime men's and women's swimming and diving teams took part in the ultra-competitive Metropolitan Swim Conference Championships, held at Rutgers University in New Jersey. In the preliminary rounds, the Privateers qualified for a spot in the finals of three events.
The squad was led by standout freshman diver
Chris Deaver (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley), who became the first Privateer to qualify for a diving finals event since the 2007 season when then-junior Alyson Paz did. Deaver recorded a score of 379.70 in the three-meter dive competition, which placed him in the eighth and final qualifying spot. He finished ahead of seven other DIII divers and two divers from Division I St. Francis College.
Deaver was also the first member of the Maritime men's swimming and diving team to qualify for a finals event since Jon DaSilva qualified for the 200 butterfly at the end of the in the 2009-10 season.
In the three-meter diving finals later in the day on Sunday, Deaver scored a 404.65, which was good enough for a seventh place finish in the event, earning 23 points for the Privateers overall at the event.

Pete Vecchio. "All of his hard work from this season has paid off. According to our records, he is the highest ranking male for Maritime in the last 15 years."
Also qualifying for the finals were the women's 400 free relay team of freshmen
Treasa Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and
Ashley O'Brien (Middle Village, N.Y./The Mary Louis Academy) (Middle Village, N.Y./The Mary Louis Academy) with juniors
Hayley Hobbs (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) and
Mariel VanderLinden (Woodside, N.Y./Dominican Academy ) (Woodside, N.Y./Dominican Academy). In the prelims, they swam a 4:18.00, which was enough for the 16th and final qualifying spot. In the finals, they finished in 15th place with a time of 4:08.08.

Craig Lyon (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) and juniors
Daniel Hemmer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and
Collin McNamara (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) swam a time of 1:45.75 in the prelims early on Saturday, which was good enough for 16th and a spot in the finals. During the finals, however, the team was DQ'ed after one leg stayed in the pool too long after their turn was done.
The Privateer men finished the event in 17th place with 112 points, ahead of Division II Pace University. The women also finished in 17th place with 106 points, ahead of Pace and Lehman College.
