Swimming Team Splits vs. Mount St. Mary, Men Win 120-85

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime swimming team wrapped up the 2014 portion of its schedule with a Skyline Conference dual meet against the Mount St. Mary Knights on Friday night, and split the matchup with the Knights as the men won by a score of 120-86, with the women falling 149-47.
 
Overall on the night, the men finished with seven wins in the 11 events, including wins in the final four events to seal the victory. The women's team was able to only muster one victory on the night against a sound Mount St. Mary squad.
 
The night began with the 200-Yard Medley Relay, as the Privateers picked up the victory on the men's side with senior Zach Haughn (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep.), junior Brendan Erskine (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), and seniors Daniel Hemmer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and Collin McNamara (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) notched a win for the men's side (1:46.33). Second to finish was Maritime's second team that featured junior Matthew Cannon (Sparta, N.J./Sparta), sophomore Craig Lyon (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North), classmate Jonathan Murray (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg) and senior Jimmy Jorgenson (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) with a time of 1:51.62.
 
The Privateers finished second in the next two races, but McNamara (22.75) collected another nine points with a victory in the 50-Yard Freestyle. Erskine (58.77) followed suit with a win in the 100-Yard Individual Medley, followed by Murray (1:02.83) as the pair combined for 13 points.
 
Hemmer was barely edged out in the 100-Yard Butterfly, as he finished second with a time of 58.33, less than half a second off the lead. Sophomore Robert Lewis (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) was third with a sub-minute time of 59.51. Two events later, Maritime rallied to pick up victories in each of the final four events, beginning with Haughn (59.27) in the 100-Yard Backstroke.
 
Freshman Douglas Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) recorded a victory in the 500-Yard Freestyle with a time of 5:23.70, junior Matthew Collins (Brooklyn, N.Y./Townsend Harris) was right behind as he finished with a 5:24.68. Erskine capped off the individual events with a win in the 100-Yard Breaststroke (1:07.25).
 
The night concluded for the men in thrilling fashion as the Privateers came back from an early deficit in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay as the quartet of Russell, McNamara, along with junior Nicholas Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) and freshman John Dean (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) picked up a time of 1:33.00 for the final 11 points of the evening.
 
On the women's side, Maritime opened with four points and a second place finish in the 200-Yard Individual Medley, with senior Mariel VanderLinden, juniors Emma Crandall and Hayley Hobbs, along with freshman Grace Stanton recording a time of 2:09.40.
 
Sophomore Ashley O'Brien and sophomore Danielle Leahy then recorded third place finishes in the 200-Yard Freestyle and 50-Yard Freestyle respectively. Freshman Sarah Soulagnet followed with a second place time of 1:08.13 in the 100-Yard Individual Medley.
 
After the first break of the night, Hobbs got the team off in the right direction with a first place finish in the 100-Yard Butterfly, as she won by more than two seconds (1:06.18). Several events later, VanderLinden swam her way to a 1:10.03 in the 100-Yard Backstroke.
 
The night finished up for the women's team with a second place finish in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay as Leahy, VanderLinden, Hobbs and Stanton registered a time of 1:50.13.
 
With the win, the men's team improves to 6-1 on the season with a 4-0 mark in Skyline Conference action, the women's team fell to 3-4 overall with a 1-4 record in league meets.
 
The teams will return to the pool in 2015 on Tuesday, January 13 as the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins make their way to Riesenberg Hall Pool for the final conference dual meet of the season, slated to begin at 6 p.m.
