ResultsWAYNE, N.J. – The Maritime Swimming & Diving team competed in its first head-to-head matchup of the 2014-15 season on Thursday as the team traveled to take on William Paterson. Final scores saw the Pioneers defeat the Maritime women by a 127-71 score, and the men by a 128-95 margin.
The women's side saw sophomore Ashley O'Brien finish in first place in the 500-Yard Freestyle event with a time of 6:47.32, she was followed by freshman Abigail Granit with a second place time of 7:32.96 in the event.
Junior Emma Crandall also won her event with a time of 1:24.07 in the 100-Yard Backstroke to net nine points for the Privateers. Freshman Kelsey Ireland wrapped up the event in second with a time of 1:37.81.
The 200-yard Freestyle team of Danielle Leahy, Alyssa Bill, Rhiannon Galletta, and Grace Stanton as the quartet comprised of a sophomore and three freshmen picked up the win with a final time of 2:18.38.
Junior
Matthew Collins (Brooklyn, N.Y./Townsend Harris) earned the first win of the night of the Privateers on the men's side as he collected a first place finish with a time of 11:08.07 in the Men 1,000-Yard Freestyle event, over four seconds in the clear of the second place finisher from William Paterson. Later in the evening, Collins had a first place run in the 500-Yard Freestyle with a 5:24.06 time.
Rookie
Douglas Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) finished up with a first place finish in the next men's event of the night with a strong showing in the 300-Yard Freestyle.
Junior
Brendan Erskine (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and sophomore
Craig Lyon (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) had a 1-2 finish in the 100-Yard Breaststroke as the duo were separated by just over two seconds.
In the last event of the night, Maritime finished strong with a Top-2 finish in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay, the team of junior
Peter Skerys (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson), freshman
John Dean (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen), Russell, and senior Colin McNamara picked up the win. The second place team was comprised of junior
Matthew Cannon (Sparta, N.J./Sparta), senior
Zach Haughn (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep.), Collins, and sophomore
Jonathan Murray (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg).
Maritime will compete in its next event on the road at Brooklyn College, for a 6 p.m. start on Thursday, November 6. William Paterson's next event will come in league competition against NJAC rival Rowan on Wednesday, November 5.
