        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 16, 2013) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team defeated rival Massachusetts Maritime, 12-10, Saturday afternoon in what turned out to be a snowy day at Reinhart Field. The Privateers recapture the Maritime Cup from the Buccaneers and improve to 3-5 on the season, while the Bucs fall to 1-1.
 
        Sophomore Daniel Ahern (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Dominic) (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Dominic) matched the game-high with five points on two goals and three assists. Senior Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) also had a solid day, finding the back of the net four times to lead all players and picking up a team-high six groundballs. Freshman Tom Kelly (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) continued to contribute, registering three goals and one assist for his team-leading third hat-trick of the season. Classmate Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) picked up five GBs and, in goal, senior Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made 14 saves for the victory.
 
        The game was tied at 3-apiece after one period of play, as Mass. Maritime notched three of the first four goals of the game, but two straight tallies by Kelly, the second of which coming man-up with just three seconds to play in the quarter, ended the action in the first.
 
        The Bucs took a 4-3 lead on a man-down goal by freshman Sean Staples at 13:49 of the second, but the Privateers struck three-straight times to take a 6-4 advantage – one goal apiece for Messina, junior James D'Amico (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) and senior Cory Gallagher (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip). Mass. would score one more goal before the end of the half and Maritime took a 6-5 lead into the halftime break.
 
        The Privateers started the second-half strong, scoring four goals in a row to jump ahead 10-5 – two by Messina, one by Kelly and the other by senior Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore). The defense and goaltending was strong also, as Maritime held the Buccaneers off the scoreboard in the third quarter, thanks in large part to Barbuto making seven saves in the stanza.
 
        Mass. Maritime outscored Maritime, 5-2 in the final quarter, scoring the first three goals of the period to make the score 10-8 before Ahern tallied his second and Messina his fourth to give the Privateers a little more of a cushion. The Bucs scored two more goals, including one with 53 seconds to go to bring it to a two-goal game, but time ran out and the Privateers took home the Maritime Cup.
 
        For the Buccaneers, sophomore Drew Prowse recorded five points on two goals and three assists and classmate Dylan Freudenberg recorded a hat trick with three goals. Senior John Hojnoski chipped in with two goals and one assist, while freshman C.J. Hanson led all players with nine groundballs. In goal, junior Paul Painten made 15 saves in the losing effort.

        For Maritime, the offesnive game ball went to Messina, the defensive game ball went to Barbuto and the helmet award when to Ahern.
 
        The Privateers return to action on Wednesday, when they will travel to Middletown, Conn. to take on the Wesleyan Cardinals. First faceoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Wesleyan's Smith Field.
