THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2013) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team will travel up to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Saturday for the first game of the 2013 season at Vassar College. First faceoff between the Privateers and the Brewers is set for 1 p.m. at Vassar's Gordon Field.
A Look At The Series
Maritime has taken on Vassar only once in the
Daniel Lawrence era and that was last year, to start off the 2012 season. The Privateers hosted the Brewers at Reinhart Field on Feb. 25 and lost by the score of 12-4.
Last Time The Teams Met
Vassar won 12-4 the last time the two teams met despite the game being tied 2-2 after one quarter of play. Then-junior
Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) scored twice for Maritime and also assisted on classmate
Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore)'s (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) first quarter goal.
Wess Johnson (Elgin, S.C./Heath Wood Hall) also scored for the Privateers and then-junior
Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made three saves in one half of play.
The best defender in the game was Maritime senior
Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), who picked up a game-high seven ground balls, while also leading all players with four caused turnovers. Then-junior
Joe Villarreal (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) was 10-for-14 in the faceoff-X and picked up five ground balls.
For the Brewers, senior Chris Toffoli recorded a hat trick, while three other players each scored three goals apiece. Senior Jack Gross and freshman Sean Brazier each had four points in the game, as Gross registered two goals and two assists and Brazier chipped in with four assists. Sophomore goalie Andrew Nicol ended the day with 15 saves to earn the victory in net.
Scouting The 2013 Privateers
Maritime will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing 3-13 season in 2012, which included a 2-4 record in Skyline Conference action, good for a fifth-place finish in the league, just one spot outside of clinching a spot in the Skyline Tournament. Messina was the team's leading scorer last year with 19 goals and 24 points, while Winter wasn't far behind with 15 goals and 20 points.
Villarreal ranked second on the team in 2012 with 64 groundballs and also took the most faceoffs on the squad and compiled a team-best 54.2 faceoff percentage (175-for-343). Barbuto made 11.64 saves per game (196 total), which ranked first in the Skyline Conference.
The Privateers will also be looking to get big contributions from junior
Mike Johnson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), who ended 2012 with seven goals and six assists for 13 points, and classmate
James D'Amico (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) (4G+3A=7P). In the midfield and defense, Maritime will look to senior captain, long-stick middie
Dylan Larmony (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview JFK) (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview JFK) to step up after contributing three goals, 23 groundballs and five caused turnovers last year and sophomore
Justin Fronckwicz (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), who added 15 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers in 2012.
Scouting The Vassar Brewers
The Brewers compiled a 3-10 record in 2012, including a 0-6 mark in Liberty League action. They have a new coach for the 2013 season, Marc Graham, and are returning their leading scorer from last year in junior Max Herman (27G+7A=34P). However, they lost their leading groundball-man and one of their faceoff-men, Matthew Pearce. Senior Ryan McCarthy will be looking to fill in that role, as he picked up a second-best 61 groundballs, while winning a team-best 44.9-percent of faceoffs (48-for-107). Andrew Nicol will return as the starting goalkeeper and is Vassar's captain. In 2012, he recorded 10.64 saves per game (190 total) and compiled a 3-10 record.
