THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2013) – On Wednesday night at the Riesenberg Hall Pool, the Maritime men's swimming team defeated Skyline rival Purchase by the score of 117-88, while the women earned a great tie against the Panthers, a team which they have never beat before, 101-101. The Privateer men improve to 3-1 on the season (2-0 Skyline) and the women move to 2-1-1 (1-0-1 Skyline).

On the men's side, the Privateers used their great depth once again to steal numerous points from each event. Maritime won only four events the whole evening, led by three swimmers that were victorious twice. Junior Zach Haughn (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep.) (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep.) was a part of the 200 medley relay team that touched first in 1:43.19 and also won the 100 backstroke in 59.70. Freshman Tony Choi (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) won the 200 free in 1:53.64 and was on a leg of the 200 free relay that won in 1:34.31. Junior Collin McNamara (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) was also a part of both relay teams that were victorious.

Also picking up wins for the men were freshman Craig Lyon (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) and junior Daniel Hemmer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) as part of the 200 medley relay with Haughn and McNamara, as well as senior John Crawford (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and sophomore Peter Skerys (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) as part of the 200 free relay with McNamara and Choi.

On the women's side, the Privateers were down by 13 points (99-86) going into the final event of the night, the 200 free relay. Maritime finished in first and second place in the event, taking 15 points, while the Panthers took only two points from third place, which meant the meet ended in a 101-101 tie. Again, this is a team that Maritime has never beaten before and the Panther squad that finished in second place at the 2013 Skyline Conference Championship last season.

Sophomore Hayley Hobbs (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) and freshman Treasa Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) both led the Privateers with three first place finishes apiece. The duo was a part of both relay teams, the 200 medley relay (2:05.80) and the 200 free relay (1:52.05), while Hobbs won the 100 butterfly event in 1:04.74 and Murphy won the 50 free event in 28.36. Junior Mariel Vanderlinden (Woodside, N.Y./Dominican Academy) won two events on the night, as part of the 200 medley relay and the 100 backstroke in 1:11.82.

Three other swimmers were victorious on the night. Freshman Danielle Leahy (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) won the 100 freestyle in 1:02.23. Sophomore Emma Crandall (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) was on a leg of the 200 medley relay team and freshman Ashley O'Brien (Middle Village, N.Y./The Mary Louis Academy) (Middle Village, N.Y./The Mary Louis Academy) and junior Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward (Fla.))         Maritime returns to action next Monday, Nov. 18, for a road meet at nearby Lehman College. First event is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Lightning's APEX Facility.
