Men’s & Women’s Swimming & Diving Sweep Brooklyn Thursday Night In Season-Opening Meet

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 24, 2013) – The Maritime men's and women's swimming & diving teams both defeated visiting non-conference opponent Brooklyn College on Thursday Night in the 2013-14 season-opening meet at the Riesenberg Hall Pool.
 
        The men's team won every single event on the night, with 12 swimmers claiming a victory. The 200 IM relay team of Zach Haughn (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep.) (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep.), Colton Walsh (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville), Dan Hemmer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and Collin McNamara (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) kicked off the night with a win in 1:46.44. McNamara had a team-high three victories, in the 200 medley relay, the 50 freestyle event (23.63) and the 200 free relay (1:36.56). Haughn won two events, the 200 IM relay and the 100 backstroke in 59.13.
 
        Hemmer and Matthew Collins (Brooklyn, N.Y./Townsend Harris) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Townsend Harris) also won two evenst on the night, Hemmer the 200 IM relay and the 100 butterfly (59.11) and Collins the two distance events: the 1000 free (11:19.72) and the 500 free (5:24.23). Rounding out the dual winners was senior John Crawford (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), winning the 100 free in 53.78 and the 200 free relay in 1:36.56 and Chris Deaver (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley), who won both the 1-meter diving event (279.3 points) and the 3-meter diving event (149.15 points).
 
        Also picking up wins for the men were, as part of the 200 free relay team, James Rostrup (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and James Jorgenson, Tony Choi (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) in the 200 free (1:55.67) and Branden Erskine (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) in the 200 individual medley (2:12.01).
 
        On the women's side, the Privateers won all but two events. They were led by two swimmers that claimed three victories on the night: junior Mariel Vanderlinden (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and sophomore Hayley Hobbs (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy). They were both a part of the 200 medley relay that started the night with a win in 2:07.25, Vanderlinden also won the 200 IM (2:33.10) and the 100 free (1:00.63), while Hobbs won the 100 back (1:08.99) and the 100 fly (1:03.14). Treasa Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) also won three events, as part of the 200 MR team, the 200 free relay team that won in 1:57.98 and individually winning the 50 free (28.89).
 
        Danielle Leahy (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) won two events, the 200 free (2:24.33) and the 200 free relay, and four others won one event each – Courtney Chambliss (Palmdale, Calif./Quartz Hill) (Palmdale, Calif./Quartz Hill) won the 500 free (14:41.92), diver Lindsay L'Hommedieu (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) won the 1-meter dive with a score of 147.65 and Megan McLaughlin (North Tustin, Calif./Foothill) (North Tustin, Calif./Foothill) and Ashley O'Brien (Middle Village, N.Y./The Mary Louis Academy) (Middle Village, N.Y./The Mary Louis Academy) were both on the 200 free relay team.
 
        Both the men's and women's teams return to action on Wednesday night, Oct. 30, when they host William Paterson University. First event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Pool.
