Captain Richard Phillips To Take Part In Coin Flip Friday Night
Captain Richard Phillips of the
MV Maersk Alabama will be on hand at the Chowder Bowl to take part in the pregame coin toss. Phillips gained world-wide notoriety when he put his life at risk in order to save his 19 crew members by being captured by Somali pirates off the coast of Africa in early 2009. After being held captive for four days, Phillips was dramatically rescued by the U.S. Navy SEALs.
Phillips is a 1979 graduate of Massachusetts Maritime and will be on the SUNY Maritime campus this weekend to share his incredible story, which he published into a book shortly after the rescue and is slated to become a feature film starring Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks.
Two Restaurants To Take Part In Chowder Showcase
Prior to kickoff, two restaurants will be taking part in a Clam Chowder Showcase at Reinhart Field - the Lobster House Restaurant in nearby City Island and the Bayhouse Bar and Grille in Rosedale, Queens. Both restaurants will offer free samples of their own recipes of clam chowder.
New Concession Stand To Debut Tomorrow Night
All Privateer home football games will have a new concession stand for the 2012 season that will be run by the Maritime campus food service company, Chartwells. The new concession area is located in the kiosk of the Science & Engineering Building (S&E) which is at the bottom of the stairs directly behind the first base dugout of the baseball field next to Reinhart Field. The stand will offer chips, soda, hot dogs, popcorn, quick-pick sandwiches, coffee and hot chocolate to name just a few items. Be sure to stop by tomorrow night.
Privateers Picked To Finish Second In ECFC Preseason Coaches Poll
The ECFC released the Preseason Coaches Poll on Aug. 23 and Maritime was selected to finish in second place after the vote by all eight conference coaches. The Privateers did pick up two first place votes and came up with 56 points, but reigning ECFC Champion Norwich University claimed the top spot with 61 points and six first place votes. Privateers And Buccaneers Renewing A Rivalry
The first Chowder Bowl between the two natural “Maritime rivals” was played during the 2007 season up in Buzzards Bay, Mass., and the Privateers came out victorious, 10-6. The two teams would continue to play each other each year until the 2010 season. However, the game was unable to be held during 2011 season due to scheduling conflicts with the return of Mass. Maritime's Sea Term. SUNY Maritime remains undefeated against Mass. Maritime, 4-0, going into tomorrow night's matchup.
