THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 2, 2012) – The Maritime women's soccer team lost its home-opener on Sunday in front of 150 fans in attendance at Reinhart Field by the narrow score of 2-1 in double overtime. The defeat drops the Privateers to 0-2-0 on the season, while the visiting Giants improve to 2-0-0.

Prior to the contest, the Privateers had a special tribute to former student-athlete Kelly Swedalla, who passed away unexpectedly this summer. Her parents and former teammates were in attendance for the ceremony, which ended with a moment of silence for the Huntington Station, N.Y., native.

Freshman goalkeeper Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) was put to the test by Keystone, but played spectacularly, making a game-high 14 saves for the Privateers, including seven in the second half. Sophomore Kadie Hook (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) scored for the second-straight game in the 17th minute when she corralled a pass by classmate Melanie Lopez (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders Trades & Technical) (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders Trades & Technical) and ripped a shot over the Giants' keeper, Katelyn Coon, from 35 yards out to give Maritime a 1-0 lead, which the Privateers carried into halftime.

In the second half, senior Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) came within inches of adding an insurance goal for Maritime, but hit the post in the 62nd minute. She had three more chances in the following minutes, but just missed wide on two and high on one of them. Hook nearly made the score 2-0 in the 73rd minute, but her shot from the top of the box rang off the crossbar.

Missing those chances would prove costly, as Keystone was able to find the equalizer with nearly 10 minutes remaining in the second half when Samantha Littleford found the back of the net from the middle of the box off a give-and-go with Olivia Kashuba. The Giants nearly scored again just over a minute later, but Paczkowski made a great save to keep the score tied. Another three shots by Maritime, one of which was saved by Coon, and one shot by Keystone that was saved by Paczkowski would be all for the rest full time and overtime would be needed to decided the affair.

Maritime came out strong in the first extra frame, as Lopez fired a shot that was blocked away by the defense in the 93rd minute. Then the Giants went on the offensive the rest of the period and fired three shots that were all turned away by Paczkowski.

In the second overtime, Trenkamp fired a shot in the box that was saved by Coon. However, in the 109th minute, with just 1:51 to go on the scoreboard, Tiana Genetti gathered the ball down low in the right corner of box and fired a shot from a bad angle that was just between the post and the reach of a diving Paczkowski for the game winner.

Coon ended the day with four saves in the victory for Keystone. The Privateers were outshot by the Giants, 23-16.

Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 5, when the Privateers welcome in John Jay from the CUNYAC. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Reinhart Field. The game will once again be the first game of a soccer doubleheader, as the men will follow against Staten Island.
