THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 23, 2012) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team will open the 2012 season this Saturday, Feb. 25, when the Privateers play host to the Brewers of Vassar College. The first faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Reinhart Field.

2012 Season Preview
The 2012 SUNY Maritime men's lacrosse team is looking to build upon their back-to-back conference playoff appearances over the past two seasons. The Privateers are returning 22 players from last year's squad that lost to the eventual conference champions, Montclair State, 4-3, in the semifinal round of the Skyline Tournament.

The attack line will be completely redone this season after losing three starting seniors from last season's team. The unit is young, but full of talent and great potential. The line includes four returning players on the depth chart that saw time on the field last year. Junior Theo Greene (Pomona, N.Y./New York Military Academy) (Pomona, N.Y./New York Military Academy) and sophomores James D'Amico (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep), Wess Johnson (Elgin, S.C./Heath Wood Hall) (Elgin, S.C./Heathwood Hall) and Mike Johnson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) are the returning players at the attack positions. Greene is a strong and powerful dodger with a good shot. D'Amico is a great off-ball attackman with a sound ability for catching and finishing inside. Mike Johnson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) is a solid rider and good dodger. Wess Johnson (Elgin, S.C./Heath Wood Hall) is a very creative player in the transition game. The new players at attack that are vying for a starting spot and playing time are Neil Nembhard (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack), Mike Gangarossa (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's), Charles Kuhn (North Babylon, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (North Babylon, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and Ray McSpirit (Darien, Conn./Darien). The attack unit will be looked at to come of age quickly and produce, enabling the Privateers to achieve their goal of returning to the conference playoffs.

This year's midfield unit is the engine that drives the team. It will be led by returning, all-conference midfielder, junior captain Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville). Messina played in all 16 games last season with 12 starts and posted 19 goals and nine assists. In addition to Messina, Maritime has a number of midfielders that will have an impact on the games this year. Senior captain John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) also played in all 16 games last year with six as a starter. He is looking to increase his scoring from 2011, after posting seven goals and five assists. Driscoll will again be looked at as a top two-way midfielder on the team. After a breakout sophomore season, Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) is looking to play a larger role on the offense this year. Last year, he scored 11 goals and had four assists in his 16 games played. At the face-off X, the Privateers return two strong face-off men with sophomore Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and Joseph Villarreal (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell). Scalesi posted a .733 win percentage and Villarreal had a .660-percentage. This pair helped Maritime win 60-percent of all face-offs last year. Also returning from last year's squad are a few players looking to improve upon their success from 2011. Junior Cory Gallagher (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and sophomore Brennen Siele (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) will look to increase their roles on this year's squad. The new players at the position looking to earn playing time are Daniel Ahern (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Dominic) (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Dominic's), Gary Kiernan (Mahopac, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic), Andrew Pappalardo (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining), Robert LaLena (North Bellmore, N.Y./Holy Trinity), James Sullivan (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Greg Acker (Centerport, N.Y./Centerport) (Centerport, N.Y./Centerport).

The defense is returning a majority of the starters that led the conference in penalty killing with 84-percent and was second in the conference in caused turnovers per game with 10.44. The unit will be led by returning all-conference defensemen, senior captain Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh). Along with Tonn on the base defense will be returning starter Greg Andrews (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and freshman starter Justin Fronckowicz (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville). Also in the mix for playing time at the base defense will be sophomore Adrian Mack (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), sophomore Michael Hayden (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill) and freshmen Luke Kinzel (Howell, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) (Howell, N.J./Red Bank Catholic). Mack brings great agility and speed along with powerful checks. Hayden is a good cover defenseman who is very smart on the defensive end. Kinzel has great size and power for a freshmen defender. Likewise, battling for playing time at base defense positions are sophomore Anthony Ambrosio (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park), sophomore James Quinn (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and newcomers to the team Daniel Shannon (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), Daniel Martens (Merrimack N.H./Merrimack) and CJ Sporing (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside) (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside).

At the short-stick defensive middie positions will be returning sophomore Dylan Larmony (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview JFK) (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Planview JFK), who had a solid season last year at the same position as a freshman. Paired up with Larmony will be newcomer Ed Fargo (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains). Fargo brings great size and athleticism to the position. At the LSM position the Privateers have two talented players with freshmen TJ Bonci (Eastchester, N.Y./Iona Prep) (Eastchester, N.Y./Iona Prep) and junior Ryan Schuster (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining). Bonci is a converted base defenseman that has shown great athleticism running between the lines. Schuster is a very physical player with a great shot. Adding depth and talent to the position are freshmen Jordan Rose (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and Brendan McGrath (West Hartford, Conn./William H. Hall) (West Hartford Conn./William H. Hall).

Starting in the goal will be junior Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford). Nick had a good season as the number two goalie last year, posting a 7.70 goals against average and a .571 save percentage. Along with Barbuto in the net, the Privateers will have sophomore Matt Baisley (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) (Holmdel, N.Y./Holmdel), Tyler Donovan (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) and Robert Sterbens (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor).

This year's schedule welcomes several new opponents for the Privateers. The squad will host one of the new teams, Vassar, in the season opener. Also new to the schedule are Maine Maritime, FDU-Florham and Potsdam. Manhattanville is returning to the schedule for the first time since leaving the Skyline Conference after the 2007 season. The traditional out-of-conference games that have remained are Western Connecticut State, Plattsburgh, USMMA-Kings Point, Massachusetts Maritime and Wesleyan. The conference schedule remains unchanged and should prove to be a tough battle, as the Privateers look to return to the conference playoffs for a third-straight year.
