THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 12, 2012) – The Maritime Rugby team competed in the Empire Rugby Football Union Downstate Playoffs on Sunday in Denville, N.J., and made it to the Championship Game after a 29-27 win over Bard in the semifinals. However, the Privateers lost to Montclair St., 46-10, in the title game.
Below is a recap of the day by coach
Bob Wolf.
Maritime played two tough games on Sunday, representing the best of this season's training in both conditioning and the “no quit spirit.” The Privateers scored early and often against Bard during the first half of the semifinal match, building up a 17-5 lead that they took into halftime.
Bard came back at the end of the game to tie the score, 17-17, on the last play of regulation. In the 20 minute overtime, Bard scored first and played a hard hitting defense, but with seconds left, Maritime bull-rushed a try in and
Craig Harkins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) kicked the conversion to win the match, 29-27.
In the Downstate Championships Final, Montclair St. won 46-10. The score did not indicate the intensity that both teams exhibited on the field of play. Montclair dominated the second half, but at the cost of several of their players due to injury and fatigue.
All seniors were able to take part in the Championship Finals match for Maritime, which was the last of their collegiate careers. I am proud of the effort and the performance of this inspired rugby team during the Fall 2012 Season.
