MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 7, 2012) – This past Sunday, the Maritime rugby team defeated Drew Univeristy, 72-12, on the road in Empire Downstate action. The win moves the Privateers to 2-1 on the season, while Drew falls to 0-3.
The Privateers fielded nine Midshipmen Under Guidance (MUGs) out of 15 players and outplayed a more experience Drew squad. On the opening kickoff, through outstanding team work, Maritime passed the ball well, touching almost all 15 set of hands, to score on the opening play.
The very next kickoff, the Privateers repeated the feat and scored again.
Maritime was relentless in all phases of plays, as they also dominated the scrums, lineouts and loose play.
John Furnari (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) scored five tries and
Craig Harkins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C Ketchum) had six conversions for 12 points.
Ryan Keane (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Prep.) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Prep.) had two tries for 10 points and
Shaquille Watkins (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) had a try, as did
Christian Yanni (Albany, N.Y./Albany) (Albany, N.Y./Albany) and
Thomas Maloney (South Hempstead, N.Y./) (South Hempstead, N.Y.).
Maritime has secured second place in the Empire State League South and will challenge Montclair State next week to for first place.
