BRONX, N.Y. (Jan. 26, 2012) – The Maritime men's swimming and diving team narrowly defeated the host Lehman College Lightning Wednesday night at the Lightning's APEX Center by the score of 121-118. The women, on the other hand, suffered a 101-90 loss to their non-conference opponent. The Privateer men improve to 7-2 on the season, while the women fall to 2-8. For the Lightning, the men fall to 6-4, while the women advance to 5-9.
The men had just four first-place finishes on the night and won the meet with a victory in the last event, the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of sophomore

Collin McNamara (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) touched first just over five seconds ahead of Lehman's team to clinch the win with a time of 1:35.18.
Individually, three swimmers won their respective races, as senior
Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) claimed Maritime's first victory of the night in the 50-yard freestyle (23.01), while sophomore
David Mierzwa (Tonawanda, N.Y./St. Joseph's College) (Tonawanda, N.Y./St. Joseph's College) won the 500-yard freestyle (5:37.75) and classmate
Dominic Pereira (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher) (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher) touched first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.47.
On the women's side, two swimmers earned three first-place finishes apiece, led by freshman
Mariel Vanderlinden (Woodside, N.Y./Dominican Academy). She touched first in two individual races, the 200-yard individual medley (2:31.36) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.98) and was a part of the 200-yar medley relay team that won the first race of the meet in 2:12.90. Also winning three times was senior
Brisa Garrido (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee) (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee), who was with Vanderlinden on the 200-medley relay team, as well as the 200-yard free relay team that won in 1:45.62. Individually, she won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:26.22.
The Maritime swim and dive teams return to the pool on Tuesday, Jan. 31, when they have their final dual meet of the season against Skyline opponent Mount Saint Vincent. This will be the first meeting between the two schools and will be held at 6 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Pool.
