Privateers Win Battle Of The Bronx Over Lehman, 5-1

Box Score

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sep. 3, 2011) – The Maritime men's soccer team defeated visiting Lehman College, 5-1, this afternoon at Reinhart Field. The win improves the Privateers' record to 1-1 on the season, while the Lightning begin the year with an 0-1 mark.

Junior Ryan Nugent (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) scored twice to lead Maritime, tallying a goal in both halves. Seniors David Kittinger (Fort Myers, Fla./South Fort Myers (Fla.)) (Fort Myers, Fla./South Fort Myers) and Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) also found the back of the net and freshman David Hraska Jr. (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) scored his first colligate goal. Tursi also had two assists on the day, while Hraska, classmate Sheik Wattara (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly for Math & Science) and senior Kevin Connolly (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) each picked up one assist apiece.

Junior Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack) started between the pipes for the Privateers and picked up the victory after playing one half and allowing just one goal, while making four saves. He was replaced at halftime by sophomore John Dunne (Southold, N.Y./Southold) (Southold, N.Y./Southold), who turned aside two shots and allowed none by him.

Lehman actually controlled the early minutes of the game, getting off the first two shots of the game, both on net, but they were stopped by Vanadia. Maritime took its first lead of the season when Tursi sent in a direct kick that rattled around the front of the goal mouth and was buried home by Kittinger just 10:29 into play. The Privateers scored again, when a shot by Connolly was saved, but the rebound went right to Nugent, who tapped in his first of the day in the 22nd minute.

Tursi scored to make it 3-0 in the 31st minute after receiving a pass from Wattara down low and launching the ball into the bottom left corner of the net. However, Lehman answered right back just over two minutes later, when a deep throw in by Thaddeus Ikwuka found the head of Jonathan Moallem, who directed the ball home to make it 3-1. The score would remain the same into halftime.

The Privateers scored twice in the second half, the first in the 57th minute, when a corner by Tursi carried to the far side of the post and Hraska was there to kick it right in. Then, just under seven minutes later, Nugent tallied his second to end the scoring after a great number of passes led to Hraska's cross from the far side that found Nugent wide open in front of the goalie.

Maritime outshot the Lightning 20-12 in the game. Lehman goalkeeper Matthew Rodney started the game and played the first half, allowing three goals, while making one save and was replaced at halftime by Jhordan Cruz, who ended the game allowing two goals and making three saves.

Up next for the Privateers will be the Skyline Conference opener on Monday night, Sept. 5, against Yeshiva University. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
