THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2011) – The Maritime rugby team sputtered and had moments of brilliance during its slugfest at Reinhart Field on Sunday, but eventually it was visiting Molloy College that took home the victory by the score of 38-25. The loss drops the Privateers' record to 1-2 on the season.
Molloy scored first, but Maritime responded quickly with two tries. Just before halftime, the Privateers were ahead, 10-5. Penalties were not a factor this game, as Molloy had 17 and Maritime limited itself to just nine. The team goal was set at 10 prior to the game.
Statistically, Maritime had a great day, winning 10 scrums to Molloy's five. Lineouts were even. Maritime did not convert on five kicks after tries, which represented 10 points.
“I'm still not entirely pleased with the continuity of the Maritime game,” said head coach Bob Wolf. “We will start shaking things up and play some of our hungry 'Killer B's'.”
The B-side handedly beat Molloy, 14-7.
This week there will be “Rugbyoffs” at practice. Those players who want to challenge an A-side player to start will have an opportunity to go one on one to win the starting position.
Maritime rugby returns to the pitch this Sunday, Oct. 2, when the squad plays host to Drew University. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
