Privateers Have Had Upper Hand… On The Field And Amongst Alums!
This is now the third season of the “Seafaring Scuffle” between the two New York schools that specialize in Maritime industry studies. Oftentimes, alums of both schools will work together on the high seas all around the world, and the Privateer alums have held the bragging rights after the first two meetings in 2009 and 2010.
Maritime has gone a perfect 2-0 against Kings Point, but both games have been very close. In 2010, the game came down to the very last drive, as the Privateers stopped a potential game-tying drive after KP had the ball with first and goal late in the fourth quarter. In 2009, the game was even closer, as the Privateers fought the Mariners to an overtime victory. With both teams coming off of Week Two victories, this game is sure to be a good one!
Admiral Carpenter To Take Part In First Home Coin Flip
Joining the captains of both Maritime and Kings Point and the officials at midfield on Saturday will be newly-appointed President of Maritime College, Rear Admiral Wendi Carpenter, USN (Ret.). Admiral Carpenter became the 10th President of SUNY Maritime College and the first woman to hold office of the oldest and largest maritime college in the U.S. on August 31, 2011, at a “Change of Office” ceremony in the historic Fort Schuyler, St. Mary's Pentagon, right here on campus.
Spanopoulos And Leary Earn ECFC Offensive And Special Team Player Of The Week Honors
After their week two victory over Western Connecticut State last Friday, two members of the Privateer football team were honored by the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) with Player of the Week accolades for their respective positions. Senior fullback Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) was named the Offensive Player of the Week after his 97 rushing yard, four touchdown performance, while classmate and kicker, Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors after a two-field goal and 6-for-6 PAT performance.
Where They Fare…
The Privateers offense currently ranks tied for first amongst all Division III schools in Red Zone Offense, having scored on all seven trips into the red zone thus far in 2011. The defense has also been clutch in shutting down opponents' fourth down conversions, as the 4th Down Conversion Percentage Defense is also tied for first in the country.
The Maritime turnover margin currently ranks 45th in the nation at 1.0, while the rushing offense ranks 48th with 208.5 yards per game. The punt returners' average of 12.0 yards per game is good for 44th in all of d3.
