MASPETH, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2011) – On Wednesday night, the Maritime women's soccer team lost in dramatic fashion to the John Jay Bloodhounds, 4-2, at the Metropolitan Oval in Queens. Down one late, the Privateers tallied a game-tying goal with just under three minutes to go, but John Jay scored two goals just 37 seconds apart in the 90th and final minute of play to take the victory. The defeat drops Maritime's record to 1-4-1 on the season, while the Bloodhounds improve to 3-2.
John Jay got on the board first in the 38th minute, when freshman Bergelie Louis found sophomore Alexis Ochoa with a pass and Ochoa beat Maritime keeper, junior Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin). The Privateers answered right back 1:14 after, however, when freshman Kadie Hook (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. The two teams went to the halftime break with that same score.
In the second half, the Bloodhounds scored in the 69th minute, as Louis put one home to give her team a 2-1 lead. Then the Privateers put on some pressure and junior Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) finally found the equalizer in the 88th minute to tie the game. The joy lasted only a short time, though, as freshman sub Stephannie Rengifo lift a shot past Marietta with 57 seconds left on the clock to give John Jay the go-ahead goal. The Bloodhounds would add another 37 seconds later by sophomore Danielle Bassett to solidify the victory.
Marietta made four saves in the losing effort, while John Jay keeper, sophomore Marcelina Kopec earned the win with four saves also.
Maritime returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 18, when the team travels up to take on Sage in the Skyline Conference opener. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Bethlehem SoccerPlex in Glenmont, N.Y.
