HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (April 20, 2011) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team defeated non-conference opponent Centenary College, 11-7, on the road Wednesday night at Cyclone Field in New Jersey. The win improves the Privateers' record to 7-8 overall, while the Cyclones fall to 5-5 on the season.
The Privateers had seven goals-scorers in the game, including having four different players score twice. Sophomore Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) led Maritime with three points on two goals and one assist, while the senior twins Ryan and Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and sophomore Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) each scored two goals.
Senior Jesse deBoer (Ridge, N.Y./McGann Mercy) (Ridge, N.Y./McGann Mercy) registered a goal and an assist and sophomore Theo Greene (Pomona, N.Y./New York Military Academy) (Pomona, N.Y./New York Military Academy) had a goal, while freshman Brennan Siele (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) found the back of the net in the fourth quarter for his first career goal. Senior Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) chipped in with two assists, while freshman Wess Johnson (Elgin, S.C./Heath Wood Hall) (Elgin, S.C./Heath Wood Hall) contributed to one goal.
Defensively, Maritime was led by senior Mark Arnold (Bay Shore, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (Bay Shore, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), who picked up six ground balls. Sophomore Joe Villareal (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) was 8-for-10 in the faceoff-X and picked up five ground balls. Senior TJ Beaudette (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) had a team-high two caused turnovers. Classmate, goalie Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), made nine saves over four quarters to pick up the win.
Three first-quarter goals put the Privateers up early, as they scored two man-up goals and one even strength goal. Matt Messina had the last two. The Cyclones scored two straight goals in the second quarter, both by senior Joe Swantkoski, to make it 3-2, but Alex Korb ended the scoring in the first half with a tally at 2:30.
Maritime opened the scoring in the first half as Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) scored unassisted. After Centenary scored twice to make it 5-4, the Privateers scored six unanswered goals. Centenary tallied three straight late in the game to end the scoring, but it wasn't enough.
Swantkoski had four goals to lead all players, while sophomore Anthony Ciaston scored twice. Junior goalie Kyle Thompson had three saves in the losing effort.
Maritime will now wait to find out its seeding and opponent in the 2011 Skyline Conference Tournament, which starts next week. The Privateers' positioning in the playoffs will be determined when conference action ends this weekend.
