THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 4, 2011) – The Maritime rugby team hosted the Metropolitan New York Rugby Football Union Division III Collegiate Championships this past Sunday at Reinhart Field and the event went off without a hitch. Eight teams came to the campus from around the area and played in eight games throughout the entire day. Maritime wound up settling for third place, defeating Stony Brook, 25-3, in the consolation game after falling earlier in the day to eventual-champion Molloy, 29-19.
In the contest against Molloy, who is ranked seventh in the country, Maritime scored quickly with wing forward
Andrew Gottstein diving across the try line.
Connolly followed and scored from Maritime's wing and in no time, Maritime was up by 10 points. Molloy answered with three quick tries to close the first half with a 15-10 lead. The Privateers' defense broke down and Molloy ran in two more tries and made their last two conversion kicks.
Maritime found their sea legs and
Brian Delano (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) broke through Molloy's defense and scored Maritime's final try. Harkens made two conversion kicks to close out the semi-final match with Molloy, 29-winning 19.
In the consolation match, Maritime dominated from the beginning only allowing Stony Brook a penalty kick for three points. Scrums, lineouts and loose play were all won by the Privateers. Delano and Gottstein ran in broken field tries again with
Jake Brohawn,
William O'Neill (Williston Park, N.Y./St. Dominic's), and
Craig Harkins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) adding to the win.
Maritime brought in guest coach
Larry Hammond for the day and he commented, “Thanks for the opportunity to work with the Maritime Rugby team. I had a great time. The team played some great rugby on Sunday and I was very proud of their play and sportsmanship!”
The Privateers close out the fall season with a 5-4 overall record and will gear up for their non-traditional spring season in a few months.
