10/4/2011 2:57:00 PM

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 4, 2011) – The Maritime rugby team's matchup against Drew University on Sunday boded well for the Privateers as they soundly defeated the Rangers, 37-0, at Reinhart Field. The win moved Maritime's record to an even 2-2 overall on the season, while Drew fell to 0-4.

With three contests remaining in the fall 2011 season, the Privateers sit in fourth place in the Met NY Rugby Football Union. For complete standings, visit the official Met NY website by following this link.

Maritime struck early and often, scoring first after Pete Rose's tactical kicking placed Maritime on the Drew 22-meter line and quick and aggressive forward play moved Maritime with well-executed passing to-and-from the backline, freeing David Griswold to score in the first few minutes of the match. Maritime quickly racked up 22 points in the first half.

Although Drew dominated the lineouts, Maritime dominated the scrums with ferocious and relentless tackling. Maritime substituted generously in the second half, as Coach Bob Wolf wanted to develop a 25-man roster in preparation for postseason play.

In addition to Griswold's try, tries from Rose, Jeff Markarian (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park), Thomas Donnelly (Long Beach, N.Y./Holy Trinity), Michael Bruederlein (Yonkers, N.Y./Mt. St. Michael), Cruz Rivera (Dallas,Texas/Catlin Gable) and Craig Harkins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) contributed to the scoring. Rose converted a kick-after to round out Maritime's 37 points.

Maritime hits the road next Sunday, Oct. 9, to square off against Fairleigh Dickinson at 1 p.m. The Privateers next home match is Saturday night, Oct. 15, against Stony Brook during SUNY Maritime's Homecoming Weekend.
