MONTCLAIR, N.J. (April 28, 2010) – Despite outscoring the No. 17 team in the nation, 7-3, in the second half, the No. 4-seed Maritime men's lacrosse team lost to top-seeded Montclair State, 13-9, in the first round of the 2010 Skyline Championships at the Red Hawks' Sprague Field. The loss ends the Privateers' season with a 5-10 overall record, while Montclair wins their 13th straight game and improves to 14-3.
Junior Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y.) and senior Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) (Yorktown, N.Y.) both led all players with seven points apiece. Korb scored a game-high five goals and had two assists, while Doherty recorded a hat trick and had a game-high four assists. Sophomore John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y.) also scored for the Privateers and junior Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) (Owego, N.Y.) registered an assist in the loss.
In net for Maritime, senior Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) (Minneapolis, Minn.) got the start and made eight saves in the first half before being replaced by junior Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (West Sayville, N.Y.). Messina would play the next 29:18 and made seven saves during the Privateers' rally.
The Red Hawks got on the board first in the opening quarter, when they found the back of the net at 10:37. The Privateers responded when Korb scored at 6:57. Less than 40 seconds later, Montclair scored again to reclaim the lead, but Doherty answered right away to tie the score at 2-2 at 5:34. The Red Hawks went on a tear and scored the next eight goals to build its lead up to a commanding 10-2, which they took into halftime.
Maritime would not go quietly, however, as the squad scored the first five goals of the second half to pull within three, 10-7. Montclair State tallied back-to-back goals to start the fourth quarter to make the score 12-7. Korb and Doherty sandwiched a Red Hawk goal to end the scoring on the day.
