No. 4-Seed Men’s Lacrosse Travels To Top-Seeded Montclair State For 2010 Skyline Championships Opener On Wednesday

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 27, 2010) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team (5-9, 3-3 Skyline) will travel to Montclair, N.J., to take on No. 17 Montclair State (13-3, 6-0 Skyline) on Wednesday in the first round of the 2010 Skyline Conference Championships. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Red Hawks' Sprague Field.

 

How They Got There

            The Privateers clinched a spot in the 2010 Skyline Tournament with its 12-7 home victory over conference-foe Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, April 17. Maritime also had conference victories over Bard (25-0 on April 7) and Richard Stockton (12-11 on April 14). This is the first time since the 2008 season that Maritime has qualified for the Skyline Championships.

 

            Montclair State has earned the top overall seed in the tournament by running the table and finishing the conference schedule with a perfect 6-0 record. The Red Hawks are ranked No. 17 in the nation by the United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and are currently in the midst of a 12-game winning streak.

 

Previous Meeting This Season

            The two teams met on Wednesday, April 21, at Montclair State, when the then No. 18 Red Hawks defeated the Privateers by the score of 14-4 despite a 12-save effort by the Maritime goaltending combo of senior Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) (Minneapolis, Minn.) and junior Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (West Sayville, N.Y.). Gallagher Named To Skyline Weekly Honor Roll

            Maritime senior Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) was named to the Skyline men's lacrosse weekly honor roll for his performances in the Privateers' final two games of the regular season last week. This was the second time this season that Gallagher earned a spot on the honor roll, as he also nabbed a spot on March 8.

 

            Gallagher made a season-high 18 saves in the Privateers' 6-3 loss on the road at Kean on Saturday. He also had nine saves against Montclair in the 14-4 loss on Wednesday, making his week total 27. Gallagher currently ranks fourth in the Skyline with 12.27 saves per game, while his .542 save percentage is fifth and his 12.14 goals against average ranks sixth in the conference.

Upperclassmen Leading The Way For Maritime

            Senior Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) (Yorktown, N.Y.) currently ranks sixth in the Skyline Conference with 1.38 assists per game. Doherty is the Privateers' leader with 37 points (19 goals and a team-high 18 assists). Junior Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y.) leads Maritime with 23 goals and, with five assists, his 28 points ranks him second on the squad.

 

            Junior Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) (Owego, N.Y.) is currently third on the Privateers with 21 points (13 goals and eight assists), while classmate Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y.) ranks fourth with 18 points (15 goals and three assists). Junior Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) (Floral Park, N.Y.) has also chipped in with nine goals and 10 assists on the year.

 

            Sophomore John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y.) is Maritime's leader with 47 ground balls, while his classmate Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y.) ranks second with 38 pick-ups.

 

2010 Skyline Tournament Information

            The first round of the 2010 Skyline Men's Lacrosse Championships will open up on Wednesday with two contests. The No. 4-seed Privateers will travel to take on top-seeded Montclair State at 7 p.m., while No. 2-seed Kean will play host to No. 3-seed Farmingdale State at the same time.

 

            The winners of both games will play for the 2010 Skyline Championship on Saturday, May 1, at the home field of the highest remaining seed.

Parking and Ticket Information For Wednesday's Contest

            Parking for all spectators will be located at the Red Hawk Deck, which is easily accessible from the campus' main entrance. 

 

Ticket prices will be $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students, children and senior citizens. 

 

Tickets will be sold at the main booth which is a short walk from the Red Hawk Deck.
