Korb Twins Combine For Six Goals In Exciting 12-11 Win Over Richard Stockton

POMONA, N.J. (April 14, 2010) – Junior twin-brothers Alexander and Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y.) combined for seven points on the night, including six goals, to help lead the Privateers men's lacrosse team to an thrilling 12-11 win over Skyline-opponent Richard Stockton on Wednesday. With the victory, Maritime improves to 4-7 overall on the season (2-1 Skyline), while the Ospreys fall to 4-5 overall (0-3 Skyline).

 

It was Alex's game-high fourth tally of the contest that broke the 10-10 tie with 3:42 left to play. Ryan added two goals and an assist for a three-point performance. Senior Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) (Yorktown, N.Y.), junior Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) (Owego, N.Y.) and freshman Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (West Sayville, N.Y.) each scored a pair of goals apiece to round out the scoring for the Privateers. Doherty, Collins and junior Jesse de'Boer (Ridge, N.J.) all chipped in two assists on the night, while sophomore Thomas Mullady (Centerport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Centerport, N.Y.) and freshman Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) both registered one helper apiece.

 

In net for Maritime, senior Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 15 saves in the winning effort as he improved to 2-6 on the season. Sophomore John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y.) was 11-for-26 in the faceoff-X and was the team's leader in ground balls with seven. Classmates Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Mark Arnold (Bay Shore, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (Bay Shore, N.Y.) picked up six and five ground balls, respectively.

 

The game was back-and-forth throughout, as Maritime controlled the play in the first quarter and built up a 5-1 lead. Stockton seemed to cool down the Privateers' momentum and was able to get out of the first half trailing only 7-4.

 

The Ospreys scored four of the next five goals in the third quarter, including two just over 20 seconds apart that tied the game up at 8-8. Richard Stockton then took its first lead of the night with the first goal of the fourth quarter, but Maritime responded with three of the next four to go up 11-10. Stockton tied it once again at 11-11, but Alex Korb found the back of the net with 3:42 to play to put the Privateers up for good. Gallagher made two saves after that to preserve the win.

 

Three players tallied a team-high three points for the Ospreys, as Matt Bologno and Matt Bell each had two goals and an assist and Brent Effenberg registered three assists. Sean Haugh was the night's leader in ground balls as he picked up 10 in the loss.

 

Maritime returns to the field this Saturday, April 17, for the final home game of the regular season against Skyline-foe Mount Saint Vincent. The Privateers will be honoring the four seniors on this year's squad: Doherty, Gallagher, Kevin May (Hicksville, N.Y./St. Dominic) (Hicksville, N.Y.) and Michael Bonanza (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Kent) (Clinton Corner, N.Y.). Festivities are set to get underway at 12:50 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
