BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. (March 20, 2010) – Junior Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) (Floral Park, N.Y.) scored four goals and added an assists for five points to lead Maritime men's lacrosse to a 12-6 non-conference victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the Second Annual Maritime Cup contest played Saturday afternoon at the Buccaneers' Clean Harbors Stadium.
The visiting Privateers (2-4) jumped out to a 5-2 advantage at the break and took control of the match by netting six of the seven markers scored in the third quarter, including two tallies off the stick of junior Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y.), to take an 11-3 edge into the final 15 minutes of play, as the host Buccaneers (0-2) were able to get no closer than the final score.
Senior Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) (Yorktown, N.Y.) added a pair of goals and three assists for five points in the triumph for Maritime, which also received a pair of markers off the stick of sophomore John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y.). Korb added an assist to finish with three points for the Privateers, who received single goals from freshmen Anthony Mendez (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (West Sayville, N.Y.).
Mass. Maritime's senior twin brother tandem of Connor and Brian Burke (Del Mar, Calif.) accounted for all of the scoring in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as each notched a hat trick with Connor Burke adding an assist to finish with four points.
Junior Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (West Sayville, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for Maritime with a nine-save effort, while senior James Hitchings (Dover, Mass.) made seven stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Privateers outshot the Buccaneers by a 23-22 margin for the contest.
The Privateers return to action on Saturday, March, 27, 2010, when they play host to Ithaca College at 2 p.m. on Reinhart Field.
