KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 17, 2010) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team lost to its rival from across the Long Island Sound, Kings Point, 13-10, Wednesday night in Great Neck. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 1-4 overall, while the Mariners improved to 4-1.

 

Maritime held a 3-2 lead after the first period on goals by senior Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland), junior Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and freshman Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville). However, seven USMMA goals in the second period, including two man-up tallies, would put the Mariners up 9-6 for the half. The Privateers got second stanza goals from Korb, junior Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy), and freshman Anthony Mendez (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell).

 

Korb recorded his hat trick goal to open the scoring in the third quarter and bring Maritime to within two, 9-7. Kings Point responded with a tally less than two minutes later, before Doherty scored again for the Privateers to make it 10-8. The Mariners would find the back of the net two straight times, before junior Alex Korb's goal with 52 seconds to play in the third brought Maritime back to within 12-9. The Privateers were held quiet in the final period, then USMMA's senior Brian Flannery scored his fourth goal of the game with 3:51 to play. Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) answered with his fourth with just over a minute left.

 

Sophomore Ryan Honey (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) picked up a team-high four ground balls, while Doherty and juniors Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) and Jonathan Miracolo (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) each recorded three ground balls. In net for Maritime, senior Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) made 13 saves in the losing effort to fall to 1-3 on the season.

 

Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) finished the night as the Privateers' top point-getter with four, all goals. Doherty added three points (2g, 1a), while Hanratty registered two assists. Honey and sophomore John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) each recorded one assist.

 

Maritime returns to action this Saturday, March 20, when they travel to Buzzards Bay, Mass. to take on the Buccaneers of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
