BRONX, N.Y. (Dec. 3, 2010) – The Maritime men's swimming and diving team won its fourth straight head-to-head meet Thursday night when the Privateers defeated local Bronx-rival Lehman College, 178-61, at the Lightning's Apex Aquatic Center. The win improves Maritime's record to 4-1 overall on the season. The women fell to the hosts, Lehman, by the score of 137-81.
The men racked up 13 first-place finishes on the evening, including six where the Privateers touched in both first and second place. Maritime claimed the top three spots in three events: the 200 free, the 200 individual medley and the 500 free.
Freshman David Mierzwa (Tonawanda, N.Y./St. Joseph's College) (Tonawanda, N.Y./St. Joseph's College) swept the distance events: first winning the 1000 free with a time of 11:46.64 and then following that up with a 5:41.74 for a first-place finish in the 500 free later in the meet. The 200 yard medley relay team of sophomore Leonard Hudson (Freeport, Bahamas/Jack Hayward) (Freeport, Bahamas/Jack Hayward), freshman Dominic Periera (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher), junior Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and sophomore Joseph Tucker (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun ) (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) led off the night with a win in 1:49.17.
DaSilva and Tucker teamed with senior captain Brian Day (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) and freshman John Crawford (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) in the other relay on the night, the 200 yard freestyle relay, and came in first place with a time of 1:26.78.
Crawford finished first in the individual 200 free in 2:01.34, while Day won the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:16.88. DaSilva captured first in the 100 butterfly, touching first in 57.72, and Hudson won the 100 yard freestyle in 1:03.18. Periera won the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.34. Freshman diver Jeff Markarian (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with scores of 161.95 and 181.30, respectively. Junior Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) also won both events he swam in, the 50 free (22.72) and the 100 free (50.66).
On the women's side, the Privateers finished in first place in four events. The relay team of freshman Ariel Beebe (Morian, N.Y./Morian Central) (Morian, N.Y./Morian Cntrl. School) and juniors Brisa Garrido (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee) (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee), Leighann Ferrari (Copiague, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and Laura Palino (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) touched first in the opening race, the 200 medley relay, with a time of 2:18.82. Beebe won the 200 free in 2:28.64, while Garrido beat out the field in the 100 breast in 1:27.06. The 200 free relay team of Palino, Ferrari and freshmen Courtney Hill (Palmdale, Calif./Quartz Hill) and Kwantisha Lozada (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) touched first in 2:04.78.
The Privateer men have the next meet off, as the women only will travel to conference-opponent St. Joseph's next Tuesday, Dec. 7. First race is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Golden Eagles Danzi Athletic Center. The men return to action next Thursday, Dec. 9, when they travel, with the women, to face Skyline-foe Old Westbury at 6 p.m.
