NEWARK, N.J. (Jan. 26, 2010) – The Maritime men's swimming team traveled to face NJIT Monday night and came away with a well-earned 110-91 victory. With the win, the Privateers improved to 5-3 overall, while the Highlanders fall to 0-14.
Maritime got off on the right foot by starting the meet with a win in the 200 yard medley relay by the team of junior Brian Day (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), sophomores Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) (who on Monday was named the Skyline Conference Swimmer of the week) and Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) (who earned Skyline Weekly Honor Roll accolades on Monday) and freshman Joseph Tucker (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun ). The squad touched the wall at 1:49.19, over five seconds quicker than NJIT's top team.
Tucker, Day and DaSilva went on to post first-place performances individually, as Tucker won the 200 yard freestyle with the only time under two minutes, 1:59.12, Day won the 200 yard IM in 2:15.74 and DaSilva touched first with the only time under one minute in the 100 yard butterfly, 56.35.
Day and DaSilva were also a part of the 200 yard freestyle team along with juniors Joseph Bosch (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and John Whiting-Stulz (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) that finished first in the last event of the meet with a time of 1:37.16.
The women's squad also took on NJIT on Monday, but fell 80-49. With the loss, the Privateers drop to 1-8 overall, while the Highlanders improve to 1-14. Senior Joanne Rydzewski (Floral Park, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) swam well in the 50 yard freestyle (33.90) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:30.57), earning a second-place finish in both events.
The Maritime swimming teams return to action on Thursday, Feb. 4, when the squads travel to take on Skyline-opponent Mount Saint Mary in Newburgh, N.Y. First race is set to go off at 6 p.m.
