THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2009) – The Maritime rugby team lost a close game to Molloy, 30-29, Sunday afternoon at Reinhart Field. The Privateers suffered their first loss of the season and fell to 3-1, while the Lions improved to 2-1 overall.
What started out as a lethargic beginning for Maritime, the ruggers demonstrated their determination following a late-game melee and scored three tries (touchdowns) with seconds left in the game.
Molloy pushed a 5 point try following the opening kickoff. Minutes later for Maritime, Twomey ran the ball off a ruck to tie the match. Molloy countered with two more tries, bringing the score 15-5 in favor of the Lions. Habbib in lose phase play picked up the ball and ran in for the try providing Maritime a crucial 5 points. Twomey kicked in the conversion and the score at half time was 15-12, Molloy.
When the second half started, Molloy, again taking advantage of a sluggish forward play, scored twice again with a try and conversion to increase their lead 27-12. There was a melee that fired up the Maritime side and with 10 minutes left in the game. Maritime put on their burners and countered with Bertline running in for 5 points and Twomey making the conversion for Maritime, bringing the score 27-19. Great forward and back play had Maritime leading for the first time, 29-27, with seconds left. Following Maritime's last score, Molloy kicked off deep in to Maritime territory and the ruggers were called for an offside penalty in loose play. Molloy kicked the penalty kick in with no time left and won 30-29.
In the JV game following the varsity game the "Killer Bees" of Maritime stung Molloy's Junior Varsity 27-5.
Next Sunday, Oct. 4, Maritime takes on Montclair State University away at 1 p.m.
