Note: This hard-fought match was played in Loving Memory and Dedication of our fellow Rugger, Ben Bragg.
SUNY Maritime Rugby Player Ben Bragg was remembered and honored as Maritime Rugger's defeat Drew 58 to 5 on Sunday. In ceremonies before and after the match, Ben Bragg's family and teammates shared time in remembrance of Ben and dedicated themselves to Ben's spirit and his enthusiasm for the game.
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2009) – The match began with Maritime kicking off against Drew University. The hard defense of Maritime's forwards caused Drew to “hear footsteps” and fumble the ball losing position.
Maritime recovered the ball and within minutes the forwards pounded in their first tri of the game and the kick was converted. After the kick to the Privateers, the ball was cleanly moved out to the wing as if it were second nature.
After a few scrums all won by Maritime, the Privateers were deep in Drew's territory once again. The forwards ran in their second tri, all within the first 15 minutes of the match.
After a sloppy catch by Maritime, Drew was now inside the Privateers 22 meter. Upon the fullbacks kick, it was blocked and Drew was able to recover in our tri zone and score their first and only points of the game, their conversion was unsucessful.
Marmite responded like champions and went back to work on Drew.
The second half was led by Maritime as the offense and defense and never let up. Maritime's wing ran in two more tries in the last five minutes of the game.
As time ran out the Privateers were on top 58-5. With the win, the Privateers move to 3-0 on the season.
The squad will look forward to hosting Molloy next Sunday, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m., at Reinhart Field.
