Rugby Stings Bard , 43-0, In Met N.Y. Division III League Play To Extend Unbeaten Streak To Two

9/14/2009 1:15:41 PM

THROGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 14, 2009) – The Maritime rugby team shutout Bard, 43-0, on the road on Sunday and, with the win, begins the 2009 season with a 2-0 record. The Raptors fell to 0-2 after the loss.

Early in the first half Maritime controlled a maul deep in Bard territory when Mialleo, left flanker, scored for Maritime's first try (five points). Fly Half Pete Rose followed with the conversion kick and added another two points. As Maritime dominated most of the play early in the contest, Tight Head Pat Walsh scored another try from a line out. The scoring continued with Mike Bordelein ran another try from the wing, followed by an additional five points from Tom Towmey who also ran in from the wing.  Rose would continue his success in the kicking game by converting the points after.

The second half began with the Motley Crew of Maritime sporting a flawless defense with Team Captain Ceferi running in a try and Pete Rose converting. Forward Dodie ran a try in from the pack and later Scrum Half Alfisi ran in his first try. Pete Rose ended the scoring with the latter two conversions, finishing his contribution of eight points.  The total 43 points from the offense and the outstanding Maritime defense bodes well for this young team.

The B-side match was cancelled by Bard as most of their A and B players were worn out and their coach felt they needed the rest for their upcoming competition in the weeks to follow. The Privateer Ruggers scrimmaged their B and C sides as Maritime Rugby roster maintains its largest team in the history of the college with 55 players.

The squad returns home to face Drew on Sunday, Sept. 20. Action gets underway at 1 p.m. on Reinhart Field
