THROGS NECK, NY – The Kings Point Mariners overcame a 7 goal deficit early in the final quarter to capture the Hagedorn Trophy, the trophy that is awarded to the winner of the annual men's lacrosse game between the Mariners and Privateers. Kings Point scored the final 4 goals in regulation, including the game tying goal with 15 second remaining, to force an extra 4 minutes of sudden death. The Privateers had a chance to win in overtime, but Keegan Boyle stopped the shot with his helmet, allowing the Mariners to bring the ball down field and score. The Privateers fell to 7-6 on the season, while Kings Point improved to 9-5.

The Privateers held a 4-3 advantage at the half, as both teams came out hitting hard and blocking shots. Jesse de'Boer scored first for Maritime, and then got a goal from Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) to take a 2-0 advantage. Kings Point would score once in the opening quarter, and the teams traded goals in the second. Lawrence Montreuil and James Buttafuoco (Williston Park, NY/Holy Trinity) each scored for Maritime, while Sean Zakow notched the first Mariner goal and then Brian Flannery scored two straight. The Mariners outshot the Privateers 17-15 in the half, but the Privateers turned the ball over 15 times to keep Kings Point in the game. Maritime also picked up 24 ground balls in the half, to go along with their 8-9 faceoff wins.

The second half was where all the action was, with the Privateers outscoring Kings Point 7-2 in the third to grab an 11-5 lead. Montreuil scored twice in the quarter, while Andrew Marklin (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East), Alex Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip), Keith Fricke (White Plains, NY/White Plains), TJ Beaudette (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial), and Rob Lenseth (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) all scored one. Zach Gray and Brian Flannery kept Kings Point from being shut out, as Gray's goal came on a man-up opportunity. Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) stopped 7 shots in the third.

The game looked to be in hand for Maritime, as Montreuil opened the final quarter with a goal to give the Privateers a 12-5 advantage. However, Kings Point continued to fight, hitting harder and running faster than the previous quarters. They scored two goals before Keith Fricke (White Plains, NY/White Plains) added his second, then scored three straight to pull within 13-10. Once again, Rob Lenseth (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) gave Maritime some breathing room after scoring his second, but that wouldn't be enough. Brennan Dougherty scored 3 of the next 4 goals, while assisting on the other, to bring the Mariners to an even 14-14 game. Kings Point was a perfect 5-5 on man-up opportunities in the fourth quarter, finishing the game 6-8 compared to Maritime's 1-3. Maritime's only man-up goal came from Lenseth in the fourth, as 6 of the 12 goals from both teams were scored with an extra man in the final 15 minutes of play.

At the start of the overtime period, things looked positive for the Privateers after Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) won the faceoff and picked up the ground ball. Maritime set up their offense and ran it to perfection, getting an open shot in front of the goalie for Keith Fricke (White Plains, NY/White Plains). Fricke's shot was right on goal, but Keegan Boyle stepped up to make his biggest save of the game, as the ball got lodged in his helmet. After a successful clear, and a Mariner timeout, Kings Point was able to set up their offense. From behind the net, Brennan Dougherty wrapped around the keeper and scored his fifth goal to get the victory.

Only four players scored for Kings Point, as Brian Flannery led the team with 8. Dougherty had 5 goals and Sean Zakow and Zach Gray each scored once. Dougherty finished with 3 assists and Flannery added 1.

Lawrence Montreuil led the Privateer attack with 4 goals and 2 assists. Rob Lenseth (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) and Keith Fricke (White Plains, NY/White Plains) each scored twice.

Gallagher finished the game with 18 saves. Keegan Boyle ended with 10. Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) was near perfect on faceoffs, winning 20 of 24 and picking up 14 ground balls. Brian Flannery led the Mariners with 7 ground balls.

The Privateers have one more game remaining in the regular season, against Montclair State, the top team in the Skyline Conference. The Privateers need a win, or a Farmingdale loss, to get a spot in the Skyline postseason. The game will be played at home on Saturday, with a start time of 7:00 PM.
