Box Score THROGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College Privateers won the first annual Maritime Cup with a strong 21-7 performance. The Privateers, now 5-2, held the Bucs to only three second half goals, and none in the second quarter. Mass Maritime (2-2) committed 10 penalties in the game, playing a man down for 7 minutes.
The Privateers never trailed, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Alex Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) at the 13:39 mark. The Bucs' Brian Burke evened the game 3 minutes later, but SUNY Maritime would go on to score 4 of the next 5 goals to lead 5-2 late in the 1st. Keith Fricke (White Plains, NY/White Plains) scored twice, Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) once, and Rob Lenseth (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) once. Korb scored his second goal of the night with 26 seconds to play, to give the Privateers a 6-4 lead after the first stanza.
The second quarter was all Privateers, as the defense buckled down and didn't allow a single goal. SUNY Maritime scored 7 in the quarter, pushing their halftime lead to 13-4. Rob Lenseth (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) scored the first two, before Andrew Marklin (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East), Lawrence Montreuil, and Jesse de'Boer got in on the action. After the half, SUNY Maritime scored the first 4 goals of the third, giving them 11 straight against the Bucs. Steve Hackeling (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) netted his first of the game during the stretch. Mass Maritime would get a goal from Jake Bickley before SUNY would score two more, once from de'Boer and then from Roy Mawhinney (East Islip, NY/East Islip). The Bucs would close the quarter with a score from Brian Burke.
Only three goals were scored in the final quarter, the first from SUNY Maritime's Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and the third from Matt Marsicano (Wading River, N.Y./Shorham-Wading River). Kevin Schultz got a score in between both Privateer goals.
Three Privateers scored their first goal of the season; Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip), Matt Marsicano (Wading River, N.Y./Shorham-Wading River), and Roy Mahwinny. Keith Fricke (White Plains, NY/White Plains) and Rob Lenseth (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) each scored 4 goals to pace the Privateers. Alex Korb had three goals while Andrew Marklin (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) and Jesse de'Boer had two each. Kevin Schultz had three for the Bucs followed by Brian Burke with 2.
Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) got the win for the Privateers, stopping 9 shots and allowing only 4 goals. Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) took over in the second half, stopping 4 shots and giving up 3. He gave way to Kevin May (Hicksville, N.Y./St. Dominic) with 3 minutes to play. May recorded one save.
James Hitchings got the loss for Mass Maritime, stopping 7 shots but giving up 13. Ryan Delaney took over in the second half, giving up 8 goals and making 1 save.
The Maritime Cup will be played annually at one of the two schools, rotating each year. The teams will play each other on a Saturday and will travel up the Friday before, spending the night on the other schools' training ship.
The Privateers will travel to Ithaca on Saturday the 28th for a 1:00 PM game, before coming home to face Kean University on April 4th.
