Plattsburgh Hands Men’s Lax Second Loss of Season with 19-12 Win

THROGS NECK, NY – The Plattsburgh Cardinals improved to 5-2 after defeating the Privateers 19-12 on a sunny afternoon in Throgs Neck. Maritime (4-2) was within 3 goals at the beginning of the final quarter, but couldn't mount a comeback. The Privateers were outscored in 3 of the 4 quarters, including 7-3 in the final 15 minutes. 

For only the second time all season, the Privateers scored the game's first goal, after Lawrence Montreuil netted a James Buttafuoco (Williston Park, NY/Holy Trinity) pass less than a minute into the game. Rob Lenseth (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) followed the goal with two straight of his own, giving Maritime a 3-0 advantage at the 12:36 mark. The Cardinals came back strong, scoring 7 straight that spanned the rest of the quarter and the first 3 minutes of the second. The Privateers were able to answer with a little more than three minutes remaining in the half, when Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) and Peter Popovich (East Islip, NY/East Islip) scored back to back goals to bring the deficit to 7-5. The Cardinals were able to score once more before half, to take an 8-5 lead into the break. 

Rob Lenseth (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) scored his third of the afternoon to open the half for Maritime, but the Privateers could pull no closer than 8-6. Plattsburgh equaled Maritime's 4 goals in the quarter to keep a 3 goal lead going into the final 15 minutes. Lawrence Montreuil, Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland), and Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) scored for the Privateers in the third. 

The fourth quarter proved to be all Plattsburgh, as they scored the first 3 goals, and outscored Maritime 7-3. Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial), Lawrence Montreuil, and Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) scored Maritime's goals in the quarter, but the Cardinals offense was too powerful. Luke Weidlein and Kyle Norchi each scored 6 goals for the Cardinals, and Weidlein assisted on 3 other goals. Tom Cerny had 4 goals and 2 assists as well. Montreuil ended with 3 goals and 3 assists, followed by Lenseth with 3 goals and 1 assist. 

Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) got the loss for Maritime, giving up 19 goals in just under 58 minutes played. He stopped 13 shots and was able to pick up 4 ground balls. Matt Billia was in net for the win, giving up 11 goals and stopping 14 shots. 

The Privateers will stay home for their next game against Massachusetts Maritime on March 25th. The game will begin at 7:00 PM.
