Maritime Men’s Lax Prevails Over West Conn. After 3 Quarters of Even Play

THROGS NECK, NY – The Maritime men's lacrosse team improved to 4-1 with their 12-10 victory over Western Connecticut last night. The Privateers outscored the Colonials 3 to 1 in the final quarter to get the win. The score was tied at 6 at the half, and then tied at 9 after the third quarter. The Colonials dropped to 1-3 on the season.

The Colonials scored the first two goals of the game, but Maritime battled back and scored two straight to get right back into the game. With 31 seconds to play in the opening quarter, West Conn. took a 3-2 lead after Sean Macey scored his third goal of the game. Lawrence Montreuil and Andrew Marklin (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) scored Maritime's goals.

The Privateers tied the game in the opening minutes of the second quarter, after Montreuil scored his second, assisted by Rob Lenseth (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown). Lenseth scored Maritime's next two goals, giving the Privateers a 5-3 advantage with 10 minutes to play in the half. The Colonials scored two of the last three goals in the quarter to knot the game at 9 going into the locker rooms.  Senior Captain James Buttafuoco (Williston Park, NY/Holy Trinity) scored Maritime's final goal of the half, notching his first goal of the season with 5:14 remaining.

The Colonials came out of halftime and scored in the first minute to regain the lead. They followed with another goal at the 6:39 mark, but the Privateers again erased the two goal deficit. Lawrence Montreuil and Alex Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) scored two straight to bring the game back to another tie, the fifth of the game. Each team would score once more in the quarter, setting up a 9-9 ball game with 15 minutes to play.

The Privateers took immediate command of the quarter, when Montreuil scored his fourth goal of the game only 47 seconds in. Rob Lenseth (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) followed with is third goal 4 minutes later, and Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) got in on the action with 5 minutes to play. The 12-9 advantage was the largest of the game for either team, and it proved to much to overcome. The Colonials would score with 2:12 to play, but could not score again.

Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) got the win for Maritime, stopping 25 shots in the game and 9 in the 4th quarter alone.

The Privateers will return home to play Plattsburgh State on Saturday. The game is set to begin at 1:00 PM.
